      My 248G Glassbox

After about 8 years in the hobby let this day be remembered....8.31.2012 as the day I bought my first brand new aquarium. I've owned 75g, 220g, 240g, 7.5g, 120g, and after about only 8 months of trying to figure out what the dims would be on my next tank settled on a custom 248g (64" L x 32"D x 28"T). I've been following a similar dimension tank on RC that is 24" tall and uses the same light fixture I will be using on this tank. It's going to take me a while to afford to buy all the equipment I want to use on this beast so don't expect this to be full anytime soon but I wanted to document the progress and I guess this size also puts me back into the large tank members club

      Day 1 - 8.31.2012 Tank Specs
Custom LeeMar 64" x 32" x 28" Euro and center braced, trimless and diamond polished with starphire front panel. Dual corner overflows with 1 1/2 drains, 1" returns.

Light fixture - Sfiligoi 48" custom powder coated black - Dual 400W halides w/radiums, 4 T5s and LED moonlights

I see why you have such a huge smile. Sweet tank. Have fun. What other plans do you have for the build?

It's about time you bought a new tank. That thing's gonna look very nice.

HA! Yeah, Vince had good timing when he snapped that but pretty sure I had that same grin from AquaSD all the way to my house. Which plans do you want to know about? Stand I'm most likely going to have built by the same guy that did PK's. Will be a very nice furniture grade quality stand, this tank will not have a canopy though as you don't put a bumper sticker on a ferrari right ...and Sfiligoi (pronouced S-fee-la-goy) Italian made is definitely in the league of being the ferrari of light fixtures. I'm going to look at having a custom light fixture hanger made for it as it is not light. Still need to figure out the sump dims. Other items I'm currently considering would be skimmer: Reef Octopus SRO5000, Tunze 6105's with possibly my 6095's for some supplemental flow. Also thinking about having the Tunze 6215 wavebox on this tank. Aquascaping most likely will be a basic and less is more atoll type of look. I'm most likely going to use new rock with acrylic rods to hold in place. Majority of my current fish in the 120g will be moved to the new tank. I've enjoyed having dosers but think I will have to go back to giving a CA reactor a shot and will go with the larger GEO. Carbon and GFO reactors moved over and controlled by the ReefKeeper Elite.

Thanks Dave, at least the equipment will look nice...getting the reef to look and stay nice is always the more challenging part

Thanks Brad, definitely a unique dim tank...I like deeper tanks and would have liked to have a 3' deep but it makes lighting decisions even harder

Congratulations Marlin, that is awesome! I'm pumped for you, you are going to be so stoked! I wish I could have afforded a new tank when I did my upgrade. Can you post a link for the Ferrari, energy gobbling light, it sounds amazing?!

Thanks Brian, the light fixture is not new...bought it used from a guy up in RC. It actually has the option as being run with 250w but since I wanted SPS dominant and it already had 400W galaxy ballasts and I absolutely love the look of radiums I'll go that route first. I'm sure at some point down the road I'll change up to LEDs. The fixture normally comes in silver but the guy that bought this had it powder coated black. I have the SE version and to my understanding the glass shields are starphire on this. LOL, sounds a bit overkill but I know the light spread on these will easily cover the extra length and width of my tank. So while it's a bit more energy, if I had went the T5 route I would have had to go with most likely a 10 or 12 bulb 60" fixture and that isn't cheap nor that difference in the amount of wattage being used. I don't usually run that long of a light cycle either and since we run AC already I should be able to get away without having a chiller. I'll most likely have multiple fan set up though to blow across the top of the tank when the halides kick on
