Are there places that rent or loan par meters? Got some newer lights recently, but looking at the light meters they look pretty pricey for something that's not going to be used much.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying looking at the surface of the ocean itself, except that when you finally see what goes on underwater,you realize that you've been missing the whole point of the ocean. Staying on the surface all the time is like going to the circus and staring at the outside.

I'd call AW down south and reefers garage up north.
You can use a lux meter and do the lux conversion from Advanced Aquarist. Its old school and not quite as good but a decent indicator.
id say use the metal halide conversion based on the color temp in your tank.

im at 35000 lux @ 20k radion. approx 500-600 par at the top of my sps tank. And 25,000 lux @ 12 - 14k around 250 300 par in my DT.

And yes Ill probably be looking to buying a par meter soon to rent
