You can scrub it off with a brush in saltwater. That helps reduce the die off of beneficial bacteria in the rock that you would get from drying it or washing it in fresh water. After that you can leave it in the dark in circulated saltwater for a period to ensure the algae is gone.

a peroxide dip helps with the algae too. 5% or less in ro will do it. You may lose bugs though,
When you say clean, theres different levels. Like muriatic clean or algae clean, or algae bug all but the bacteria clean.

HAHAHA. The muriatic acid and drying method. Itll make it dead dead. But clean clean. It takes time and youll have to cycle it. you may as well get dry or fresh cured.
Fresh ro and peroxide @ 1 to 3% soak for 5 or ten minutes will kill algae and bugs and ich. not kill the cycle. will still take time of course to come up to speed.

me I like bugs. Bugs good. you can pull the brittle stars out of the fresh dip and they usually survive. bristles too. a higher concentration of peroxide to 10% will kill most everything but eggs but a longer dip will penetrate the rock and affect the good bacteria more., I would rinse like heck and soak in scripps before adding to a tank.
no guarantees of course as bugs are much smarter than we are.

Why is that? Not to sound confrontational, I am just curious what could happen

Boiling them releases and aerosolizes organic toxins in the rock, which are then ingested into your lungs by breathing.
