      home made inline gfci

      Hello,

Instead of buying an inline plugin gfci for my power is there any problem with buying a gfci outlet, wiring it to a plug in a gangbox and plugging it onto the wall? basically make my own inline gfci. it is a lot cheaper. is this a bad idea?

How about just a power strip?

GFCI power strips are pretty expensive. A GFCI outlet is like 7-10 bucks... inline or power strip are 30-50 bucks. I don't know why they cost so much more.

Is there any problem with buying a GFCI outlet then just installing it in the wall inplace of an existing outlet? That's what I did, worked great! I also made a power box once with 10 outlets connected to switches, I had a GFCI protecting that entire system, but it was allot of work compared to replacing an outlet.

Hmm... I could, but I am in an apartment. I don't really want to change the outlet.

there is no problem with it. It is less scary than changing the outlet if youve never done it.

I rewired an old, old rentalhouse, including GFCI. had to pull wire through the walls, climb in the attic, drill holes, etc. I pulled one breaker, and the rest I just attached into the two bare wires that were strung across the attic. Never had another problem with power failures after that. If you improve something in a rental, generally the landlord/mgmt will be happy - I wouldn't ask, just do it right.

I might change the outlet, the thing is this is a brand new apartment complex that was just built. I have done some wiring, maybe I'll look into changing the outlet. It's pretty basic, I will just be extra careful.

One other thing - I might just incorporate a gfci into my project box for my controller, then it is portable. I could just stick an outlet in there. Kind of dumb but it saves $30

I didn't see these before - these are only a few bucks more than an outlet. I'll just get this instead http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00UOU6OVU/
