      Has your carpet nem ever?

So I noticed that my carpet nem had moved from the rocks down to the sand bed the other day and thought it was weird because it was in the rocks for months...

Maybe he wanted a change in scenery...well today this is what I came home too...

You think he was hungry and was in search of food??

      Sux for the pbt...

Just checked back and the pbt is now fully engulfed....

Sea anemonies don't actually hunt, they really don't need to, as light is actually their main source of energy, solid food a secondary means.
If that is a hadonni which it looks like it is, it should be at sand bed.
usually if they are not either your sand bed is not deep enough or your lights could be less than what it needs, hadonni desire very strong lighting.
Your PBT either brushed up against it, or it could have been sick or weak, the sea anemone did not hunt it or anything.

PBT's are typically on the sensitive side, many have health issues.
Very common for a sick fish to swim into or get blown into a nem

when i first got it months ago...it wouldn't go onto the sand but i was able to get it to latch in a large rock crevice and it was there happy for awhile...the other day i noticed it moved to the sand but it was still attached to another piece of the rock...so i don't know.

hope he does not take another fish or else i will have to quarantine this guy to another tank...i like the nem and i like my fish too!

pbt has been in the tank longer then the nem and has been doing great...so i don't know if health is the issue...i know that the carpet is super sticky when handling it so i would imagine if it latches onto a fish it would be hard to escape...i guess i can start feeding it more often...

how often do these guys usually need to be target fed? i always assume lighting was enough.

If your light is strong enough you could never target feed at all, in fact some people purposely don't to try to not have the nem outgrow the tank too quick.
hadonni get to 2' in diameter, and they are by far stickier than all other host nems, so they need extra buffer zone space.
Not sure how big your tank is, sometimes that is the issue.
Most other nems a fish may graze and get away, w/ a lesson learned, hadonni are notorious for just being way too sticky to get away.
Bummer to lose a healthy PBT
FWIW I've kept sea anemone's for about 30 years now, I've had most species long term, but w/ my exp in keeping hadonni's I'm just over them personally.

yea i have a 400g but he's currently in the left side of the tank near the end...and thats the end where i usually feed my fish too...might have to change it to the other side from now on...if i have another casualty i guess it'll give me an excuse to start up an anemone only tank...

or i need to get a pair of clowns to host it so it can chase other fish away...

While both nem and clown can live w/out each other, I really find it key to have them both, that symbiotic relationship helps in many ways, and yeah, chasing away fish is one.
just keep in mind not all clowns will take to all nems, a natural host match is best, I have a link saved that shows what clowns naturally host in what nem if you want I'll look for it.
Yeah, 400g...yeah that should give enough space!lol(Species tanks are really cool though)

So quick update...guess the nem didn't eat all of it and spit half the tang out last night...but once I got home my chocolate chip starfish is all over it...circle of life I guess...

Hopefully doesn't foul up my water...

      *sigh*
