      Upgrading question

When you upgrade do you use new sand or reuse the old one? If you use the old one does it cause a mini cycle?

IMO use your sand it has lots of good stuff in it. I have upgraded and down graded and I used my sand and shared what I couldn't use with other reefers.

Always use my old sand, with some new on top. Make sure you rinse your old sand with some tank water to get rid of nitrates. Its always tough to say how much but at least waste a few gallons with rinsing the sand. If you do that your cycle will be pretty minimal if you have one at all. Water changes every week until the cycle period is over and you should be good.

I always reuse my old sand. I rinse it with saltwater until the water runs mostly clear, but if it's a totally new tank (IE no livestock) you could leave it fairly dirty to help start the cycle.
Some folks around here prefer to use new sand every time. (I'm too cheap for that! )
