hello everyone!
i'm starting this thread also by way of informal intro.
though i've butted in and posted already.
i fell into the hobby because two years ago, i finally
agreed to let my kids "win" a comet goldfish at the
SD fair. and my son actually did win one. so we wound
up with three goldfishies. being the softy and googler that
i am, i read up on goldfish cruelty in bowls so they got
a ten gallon tank to frolic in. they are still there and very
happy.
i started a 3g aqueon zen nano for plants and tetras.
(the addiction begins!) but then had to emergency convert
that to my first saltwater tank. like everyone, i've admired
the beauty and colors and diversity of saltwater reefing,
but was totally intimidated. we have no space for anything
big in our house, and the consensus is that a pico reef is
one of the hardest things you can try and keep.
so i bought a self sustaining "jar" instead. kickstarted
by someone who was an experienced hobbyist.
that was a disaster. i got terrible hair algae and diatom
bloom and one of my mushroom melted so after only
2 weeks of cycling with live rock and sand, i put my
two mushroom corals in 3g pico. cause it certainly couldn't
have been worse than the Jar of Death. (in retrospect,
i had put corals that were too large for the jar. though
try a self sustaining jar with nothing but lighting at your
own risk. ha!)
but the tank did well. though not ideal for saltwater imo.
my one loss was a pom pom crab. which was very sad.
i've only kept sexy shrimp so far. my goal is to be able
to keep a rock flower anemone and a small fish or two
after the 8g is more established.
i've been really happy with the cadlights so far. the
glass is pristine, and i had asked for the older model
with one inch more depth and space in the actual tank area.
ideally, i'd not have the corner rock on the left, but
it's there because the pump blows sand around in that
corner until it's bare. didn't particularly like that.

my two sexy shrimps love the frogspawn coral! this
one especially is always nestled in it.
i bought a couple of coral from legendary corals up in SJ
for the first time and opted for the cheaper $20 two day
shipping. was worried for them. the confusion mushroom
is a little bigger than my pinky nail and the super saiyan
zoas are small too. but they survived and are open!
other than that, i'm only six months new in the hobby.
i'm a stay at home mom, but also a published novelist.
i write chinese inspired fantasies and my first two novels
are out through harpercollins. i've also been a student of
chinese brush painting since 2001.
HELLO. =)
