      Kalk Overdose. Acros in trouble.

So, my ATO somehow stuck open and a gallon of kalk hit my 10 gal tank! Sh*t! 9.2 pH. Used some carbonated water to drop the pH down to. 8.4. Fish, couple shrimp, most inverts lived. Softies OK, stonies OK except for acros...Garf b, and Ora bonsai may make it along with the green tenius. Other acros having r t n. Very sad day. Thinking a couple gold dust gekos would look nice where the tank is. Saddest part is my rkl could have shut down the doser if I had set an alarm for high pH. Hard lesson learned. Picts later on my tank post.

      Cheers,
      DD

Are you using a float switch?

Yes. It's surrounded by PVC tubing to keep unwanted pests off. A small stomatella snail could make it in, but it's pretty clean and smooth. It's the switch that DA sold a few years ago.

Lost a beautiful purple plana and blue tinius. Fuzzy tinius, Garf b, and red planet 99% wiped out. Very sad as these were raised from pieces about 1.5". Literally cried.

Damn that sucks, that tank is beautiful. Definitely a setback, but don't lose hope in the tank. At least you know how to prevent it in the future.

Those things are notoriously unreliable. That's why I switched to an Osmolator. If you're going to use a float switch, I'd recommend replacing it every year or two to be safe. You are right though, an alarm from you pH probe to shut off the dosing pump would prevent that. Lesson learned. I have my dosing pump triggered to shut off if the pH gets above 8.5. Hopefully you can make frags of what is left.

Dang I'm sorry to hear that this happened

When you get it stable again; come over and I'll give you some frags for free, including a really nice red planet frag.

Thank you to everyone for the kind words and offers. More of the monti's are receding, but not gone yet. Time to get an Osmolator so….

In two weeks I leave for South Korea. Before I go I'm going to frag up The ASD Rainbow Milli, Garf Bonsai, Miami Orchid, Monti Confusa, and others. Thankfully these survived (mostly). They'll all be two to four branches. By the end of August they should all be well encrusted on the plugs and will price them out for $15-$20 or so. Less for more! Sorry to those who bought previously for more. Come by and I'll make it up.

The Tunze is expensive but it's been highly recommended.

Again my thanks to everyone. Looks like the Geckos get to stay in the wild for now!

      Cheers,
      DD
