My New Experience with a Nano

I'm sure there are quite a few people here with Nanos so we thought it might be a good idea to generate a new FORUM and give us all a specific place to ask questions, learn from each other, and share info to help us avoid all the challenges of setting up a smaller system.

I recently jumped into the Nano world after seeing all those cool systems sitting on the counter tops in local fish stores. I wanted my wife to get into the Hobby and thought it would be a good way to get her involved.

After picking up a smaller 5g system that was mostly set up for Saltwater, I quickly learned I needed more light, some more space, and preferred a closed lid type system. I ended up with a 14g BioCube with a built in overflow, built in 2 x 18w PCs and some moonlights. These are cool systems and capable of supporting quite a variety of corals and smaller fish.

I wanted to get this area started up and will post PICs and more info shortly about my personal experiences. Lots of good deals here on SDR for Nanos so those thinking of starting a Saltwater System, a Nano might be a good place to practice.

      Thanks!

Do you plan on modding your biocube with LEDs? Have you done any mods to the tank or is it stock.

My New Experience with a Nano

living in an apartment keeps me from upgrading into a tank size I REALLY want. Space isn't the issue...it's breaking it down when it's time to move that I don't want to deal with. For now I have a spec v (5gal) to appease my addiction. Lol

Well there are some cool PICs and Builds in the Members Section I might move over here and try and Start a mini-Nano Forum.

I have done the space thing, the electricity bill thing, the cost thing, flood thing, all of them. I have recently seen my new Nano maxed out (as you say, run out of room) so is my 40, 120, and 300..LOL

I find it less maint to manage the larger tanks but can keep nicer things in the Nano (with a smaller fish footprint).

Want to get into more lighting so there are a few LED builds going on here to watch! Just don't want to pay more for the LEDs than I did for the tank, but it looks like its heading that way.

Feb 14 2013 PIC for reference. PC lighting, no skimmer, just bag of carbon in back, all stock pumps and filtration. Dose Kent Nano Reef #1 and #2 every other day. Some Phyto feed every other day or so.

Fish: One Clown, one sixline wrasse. Assorted small crabs. Will add a Cleaner Shrimp shortly.

"...it's breaking it down when it's time to move

I actually bought a complete, cycled system off the countertop of a LFS. Took a few pics. Drained the water and put all the items in a tub or bagged them, all in a bucket. Left 6" of water. Got home, pulled any murky water out, added half new, half of the previous. Let the tank settle with zero losses. Moving the smaller ones is not that hard. And I have moved my share of tanks...LOL

Have the tank in steady state now. Think I might have trained the Wife to keep her hands out and quit moving stuff around. Next step is probably to pull the Pulsing Xenia out and glue some items down to make room. Thing I've noticed is that in tight quarters the "warfare" is agressive when you move things. That Tri-Colored Clove put on a mean argument with everyone. All that moving stuff around pushed the clam to expiration so that quickly became fish food for the 120.

Still in the learning curve for Nanos. Think an LED upgrade is next.

Yea. Just need to ask around or just see what pieces can be placed in close quarters without then wiping out each other.

Hi reefers. I am just getting back into reef tanks after many years. The Nano seems pretty cool to start with. Any suggestions are welcome.

Don't know what prevailing theory is these days on which commercial nanos are best. I've done nanocube 12, nanocube 6, nanocube 24. Aquapod 12 and aquapod 24. Made my own from a 20 Tall (that one was the most successful), and have had a red sea max 130. RSM is good, although make sure in any of these systems you add extra flow. I always end up ditching the hood and replacing the lights for some reason, like to get my arms wet a little too often...

Oh, I forgot the 20 long reef ready frag tank. That one was cool, but I didn't run it, I built it just for a project and then sold it...
