      Back surgery

Ok so been dealing with back issues for some time now. Been through all the pt and chiropractic for the last ten years. Many of you who know me know I have been dealing with this for a while. Well long story short, saw the surgeon today, and recommends a fusion surgery. Just wondering if any of you have been through this so I know what to expect any feedback would be cool. Not that i'm scared I have to get it done , cannot even hike or for that matter stand for more than 10 minuets any more. Let me know--thanks--V

I know how you feel V..I have 4 herniated disc 2 protrusion and 2 buldging on my neck and my neurologist told me I need surgery..ived been putting it off for. A while now becuz I know people that have had the surgery done sometimes say its worst than before they had the surgery..and I know one that completely became paralyzed from it...so ived been thinking really hard of what to do..I know there's a laser surgery thats less invasive and seen really great result..im just waiting to see if my insurance will cover..im really tired of medication just to even function..so I know what you are going through..prayers bro. For a great fast recovery if you decide to get the surgery..becuz ive also heard good results..

My Grandmother had surgery on her back a few years ago. It was very successful and she's twice your age.

I had surgery on my lower back (L4) for a herniated disc. That was 12 years ago. It made everything better and gave me a 3" vertical scar on my back. (Chicks dig scars) I had two vertebrae fused in my neck (C4,C5) about eight years ago. Again, I have no regrets. Now my lower back is hurting again and when PT doesn't work, which I know will be the case, I am sure that I will have surgery again, but this time they will have to fuse the vertebrae because I am guessing that there is little left of the disc. I wouldn't hesitate. The risks are well worth it to avoid pain like this.

I've had 2 laminectomies and the last one was full disc replacement on L4, L5 and L5S1. I've been great every since. Some say that when fusion is performed, the above area takes the brunt of all since the fused area's are confined. Get a few opinions before you do anything. Good luck

OUCH! ..well, I am in recovery from a hemi-laminectomy and diskectomy on L4-L5..had fractured/fragmented a disk on a trampoline and one of the fragments migrated and lodged into my Sciatic nerve root. Lost feeling and use of left leg. After 29 pills a day and 3 months bed rest , they had to do it or the leg would never return to function. I can tell you that although it is a long recovery, I am in such a better place. The pain went from literally unbearable ...to now 6 mos. after very managable.I have found Celebrex to be a life saver, as I was fed up with all the narcs I had been on. If you're pain is unmanageable, I would go for it wholeheartedly. Do your research on the Dr. ( My Nuerologist was great!) With mine and many other back issues , life is altered after surgery, which I stubbornly still struggle with. But the limitations are so worth the relief! Best of luck to you , and hopes for an easy recovery!

      Re: Back surgery

While I've never had back surgery, I do have a little bit of experience with surgeries. Try 4 knee surgeries and 2 shoulder surgeries. My only advice after going through all of it, make sure you damn well need it done. In hind site, I would probably have skipped my knee surgery. You are certainly much older than I was when I had my first knee surgery (16). It changed my life in a not so good way. I can't run anymore and my knees still hurt. All I got out of it is a guarantee that I'll need knee replacement surgery by the time I'm 40... My knees bother me more now then they did before I had surgery. I'm not an X-ray tech but your back looks pretty f'd up my friend.

Oh man, I had two back surgeries in less than six months a few years back. It sucks, but when it's all over, you'll be glad you did it. It'll be so much better.
My long standing issue is that I used to be a "martial artist", I would train 3 hours a day, 5 days a week. When I was bed ridden or just couldn't do ANY exercise
for almost a year after the surgeries, I gained like a 100 lbs... I never managed to get back into shape but that's probably my own fault. I just got super depressed and
discouraged. So, piece of advice, prepare for that time with a healthy diet as a priority.

I certainly am not an alarmist, but a very good friend of mine was on Celebrex during his recovery from shoulder surgery for a very long time. He suffered a heart attack and after he recovered from that, he did some research and discovered that Celebrex has been tied to causing heart attacks. There isn't enough proof to pull the drug, but you might want to look into it. It is looking more and more like I am headed to another back surgery.

I posted this shot in the "Behind the keyboard thread" but it would be more appropriate here:

My neck is now fine, thanks to $40k in surgery and $8k in titanium hardware.

My lower back is what is bugging me now. I feel for you V.
