Hi
Stupid question.
Can I have my AI Nano Controller to control my lights, and then my Apex to control the AI controller -- just the basic function ON/OFF, w/o the extra module?
If so, do I just plug the AI Controller into the Apex?
Thanks

You cannot connect the AI controller to the Apex. The AI controller has a USB interface (which is for doing firmware updates only); the Apex Aquabus looks like USB, but it is not USB. If you plug a USB device into an AquaBus port, you will probably fry the USB device or damage the Apex.
In order to fully control the Sol with your APex, you need to use a VDM

If using the AI controller, there's little value in using the Apex for on/off control.
Finally the answer I was looking for!
I'll get my AI Controller and lights on Friday. If you were me, would you return the AI controller and get the Apex instead?
The Apex (Full) + VDM module + cable costs about $600, but the Apex will control all of my gadgets.
Thanks RussM
If you use the Apex, there's no need for the AI controller, so I'd send it back.
If you give details of exactly what you have to control and what else you want to do with the Apex (pH monitoring, salinity monitoring, pump control, etc), I can help you tailor the best Apex system for you. You may not need the full Apex... an Apex Lite or Apex Jr might prove to be the most cost-effective option for you.
Be specific with what equipment you have...
Thanks
I'm just setting up a 25 gallon AIO cube.
I have a AI Nano, 1 MP10ES (Not the W), skimmer, heater, and a return pump. That simple. It needs to be as low maintenance as possible.
AI controller controls the light. MP controls the powerhead. But now I'd like to incorporate them both under 1 controller, that's all.
The Apex would be the master controller -- more of an investment for future add ons.
If you are not interested in pH monitoring at this time, then an Apex Jr & VDM would be ideal. You can always add additional EnergyBars and probe modules as needed. Spend the savings over buying the full Apex on livestock
Thanks for the tip.
I just wanna max out my credit card before my wife does! hahaha I'm all in the past few days. eheh
