      NEW LEDs

      Hello fellow reefers,

I'm panicing right now. couple of days ago i replaced MH light 14000K 150W with 120W cree LEDs for my 29G Biocube and most of my corals are now closed. I also have a temporary very low flow which will be fixed today after work. The LED fixture is about 4" above the tank and I tried dimming whites to no avail.

      Please advise

      Thank you

Any time you change the lighting whether it's the whole fixture or the bulbs you will need to acclimate the corals slowly to the new light. I'm going through the same thing with a new fixture. Mine are at whites-50% / blue 70% / royal blue 75%, right now some of my SPS are showing little to no polyp extension. I figure it will take a month to bring lights up to the level I want & will probably never crank them up to 100%. don't freak out, just start low & work up by increasing weekly.

When switching to LED's it's vital that you photo acclimate your coral. If your LED fixture is dimmable, start it off at around 30-50% and slowly increase it to 100% or whatever you want it to be at over a few week period. If it isn't dimmable, you'll need to put something semi transparent between the light and the tank in layers and remove a layer at a time over a few weeks. Good luck!

4" from the water surface is to close for LED's if you can raise it up higher and you could also place a temporary light blocker I can teach you how to do the light blocker

Thank you all for putting my mind at ease. They are dimmable so i'll just tone them down to 40% or so and start raising slowly.

I think you have them too close as well. Maybe start 1 foot above the water line with blues at 30% and whites at 30%. Once your corals open up again, adjust height for spread (if you have optics)and slowly increase both the whites and blues little for a few days.

I currently run mine at 14" above the water with whites at about 60% and blues at 75% to give you an idea.

Thanks baldbean. I'm trying to figure out how to hang the fixture. Right now it sits on boxes from each side that are 4' high. I put a 2'thick white filter pad to cover the entire lid and dimmed the output down to 30-40%. I would hate to hang it from the cieling so will work on to hang it from the back wall.

If you go to the members tanks forum, page 2, thread titled " lights " about halfway down the page you can see how many people hang their LEDs. Hope that helps.

Here is how i hung mine.

The actual hardware are Yo-Yo Hangers which i bought for like 10 bucks and are adjustable. I had to attach a piece of wood to the ceiling beams because the beams themselves did not line up over my tank. The hangers are attached to the wood.

Please excuse my DIY fan holder... LOL

Nice setup. As long as you like the way it is and it looks neat. I dimmed the light down to 30-40% and temporary put a frame from storage bin and it is about a foot from the level.
