Just saw this... So sorry to hear about your losses Adrian, I feel especially sad since many of those corals spent time in my old tank...
Glad to hear your wife is so supportive... I just had the liability discussion with my gf and risk management officer about catastrophic failure.
I'm now required to have a coverage before I set up my 12 gal.
Let me know if I can help.
Brian

It's funny bc the tank I was trying to sell. Ur 40 gallon is the only thing I had to put the coral in. So what did make it has made its way back into the 40....
Sorry to hear about your tank and your floor.
I had flood in my house couple years ago... not tank related. I know how it feel. I hate flood!
So just a little update. I had a lot of extra equipment that I couldn't sell while it came in hand. I had a overflow box so I was able to hook up my sump and I had just gotten a smaller pump From slicktop that I could use to pump in. I also had a single metal Halide I used on one side to try and help the harder stuff grow to help keep them out of shock. I have my nano skimmer on the tank right now And its working over time bc all the corals are releasing toxins. Soo I will have my euro reef skimmer in the sump filtering
I love my wife! She told me today I can get a larger tank as build it how ever I want...! I'm thinking a 300gallon...
Nice!!
I am not a fan of Acrylic and it's two times as much. I've been looking and I can get a star fire 300 for 1300 and a plexi 300 is over 2300. And the coverage for a glass tank is better.
Sorry my wife is the youngest of her sisters...
I hear ya. I know many who won't go to acrylic "just because" of the scratching. But... as example, all large tanks I've ever owned have been acrylic. Minimal scratches (you just have to keep magnets away from them), and the benefits outweigh over glass. They are super clear (more clear then any starphire glass), super light, won't "break" and leak...etc.
I know there's some bad points too (some companies don't cut the top out enough to allow easy access - like my 240, super open), and upfront cost when buying new. You could always call Joel at "Mobile Plastic Works"... I know his prices are much less then a "brand name", and he's been building acrylic for years... he built me a 260gal acrylic 20yrs ago.
... I love my acrylic 240. I'd be happy to show you mine... before you go glass. JUST to 'see' what you might be missing.
(and if you went with a 240 sized tank, every now and again an acrylic will come up for sale... for cheap! Like... $100-$300ish)
I had a 150 plexiglass when I lived in northern Cali and I worked at pet stores when I was in highschool. I have just seen the small effects like the spider cracking. Also blowing of the front if it wasn't braced right. The glass company I found builds for really crazy stuff. If I went with plexiglas I would build it myself. I used to make plexiglass tanks at one of the stores I worked at so I know how to do it. I just am not a fan of plexiglass.
Well it's looking like I'm going to go with a truvu tank. They have the best warrienty.
