      ATT or COX or? Opinions?

I need to order a Land Line (Verizon just doesn't have the signal at my home) and include a dedicated internet pipe (for work) at home.

Wondering if anyone has recently switched over, installed the same, or has an opinion on what is the best?

I have Verizon Wireless (unlimited data) and use that a lot. Not entirely thrilled with all the dropped calls and even installed a Wireless Access Point on my current Internet (Cox).

Need the new stuff for work and it needs to be bullet proof...Opinions/Thoughts?

If you want a slow connection, go with ATT/SBC Global/Yahoo (they change names weekly, so i don't know what they use now). Their DSL service is horrible.
I am on Cox "Plus" or whatever its called for $65/mo, and my down speed is 30mbit/sec, sometimes even higher. None of the wireless providers will even come close to this speed.

What is wrong with your current Cox line? Mine has been absolutely flawless since day one, however, their DNS servers are very slow.
Set your DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google DNS) and see if it works any better.

+1 on all points. While I've had periodic troubles with Cox TV, their digital phone and Internet service have been absolutely great.

Just get an AT&T cell and i bet you would be fine... that's how it is at my house! Verizon sucks! also i am working on the sunrise power-link and AT&T works almost everywhere while our Verizon work phones are virtually useless in most places including El Monte valley all the way out to the desert...

... if you want bulletproof, and speeds we all dream of... just drop a T1

You'd still be succeptible to power outages at the main frame, or other satellite/intermediate frame locations... or mother nature ripping down the lines, back hoes or sink holes tearing up buried cable... etc.etc. But, for the most part... bullet proof with awesome speeds.

You have a UPS already (to keep up the data equipment and peripheals)?

location location location... not every service provider, has good coverage everywhere.

I used to carry a GoPhone (ATT) along with me when I knew my Verizon phone would get rough coverage. Yet, the ATT network would drop in some areas Verizon was solid. It just all depends on antennae placement, power output, and your device.

Actually... it's not a limiting speed or type of connection (they offer faster T1 speeds, IE; wireless, bonded...etc). Cable speeds are relevant to the network, and who's using it at the time. Upload speeds will differ from download...etc.etc. T1, is rock solid all day, all hours.

... the "gamble" is, if you want speed and then when do you want it. With a T1, you don't worry about anything (time of day, or how many kids are gaming in your neighborhood on their cable modems...etc). With a cable modem, you are at the mercy of the provider, and everyone using that service or "pipe".

A two edged sword, but a T1 is bulletproof (my initial point), and bundled T1s even more robust! ....10yrs ago, we wouldn't even be discussing which is best

I need the new line for work and want to separate it out from my current Cox Internet for billing purposes. Plus I have no idea what the impact is when my kid is doing his online gaming (XBox Live). I really need the copper line for conf calls as well. I have been sitting in the driveway for conf calls as it seems to not drop there, so I have my coffee in the truck on early AM calls. Pretty funny.

Cox has a $9.99 land line special, I guess I need to check and see what they offer for internet access and see what is reasonable. I previously had ATT DSL and that was fine...but think the XBox Live would have destroyed that...

      Hmmmm...thanks for the feedback....

T1's were bulletproof 10 years ago. Right now they are fading away, but still cost a ton. $300/mo was the cheapest one I was able to find last summer, and ONLY if you are located right next to the local loop. If you are not, and most residences are never near the local loop, your initial setup price goes up on thousands of dollars. A client of mine lives "deep in the bowels" of RSF and internet choices there are DSL and dial up, and even DSL provided barely 512K down and about 12K up. Anyway, we tried to get T1 or a cable there. Quotes from T1 providers were $15-25K for installation, due to absence of the local loop and Time Warner quoted him $65,000 to run cable to his house!

Right now T1 is also not all it is cracked out to be. 10 years ago it was insanely fast. Now? Not so much. At my last job we had 50-60 people on a dual T1 line. That saturated the pipe so much, that i spent my days running Ntop to find out who was hogging bandwidth and blocked them the firewall. Streaming internet radio and youtube killed connection speeds for everyone. When people showed up in the morning and started checking their email all at once, it took nearly a minute to pull up Google's front page.

After that I went to work at UCSD and eded up on dual OC-192's. Now THAT is a fast connection. 750Mb Ubuntu ISO download took 38 seconds.
Image below is directly from my Mac Mini workstation.

As far as too many kids playing games? I am yet to be affected by it on my Cox cable, however, on Time Warner, that was an issue. I am not sure what they do differently, but perhaps my more expensive "Plus" account saves me from that.

JAT, T1 is, by international standard, fixed at 1.544Mb/s. There are fractional T1 circuits available at multiples of 1/24 of a T1, but not faster. There are other circuit types, such as DS3/T3 running at 45Mb/s and the OC-n circuits like solfald mentioned available in various higher speeds, but a T1 is always a T1 at 1.544. But the speed is really moot - due to the old TDM technology involved in delivering a T1, at even a relatively short distance, the tariff rates (based on distance) + the installation charges + the ISP fees are outrageous compared to any form of broadband Internet connection. And a T1 modem (called a CSU/DSU) costs hundred of dollars. Frankly, anyone calling ATT and wanting a T1 solely for Internet access in a residence would probably be laughed at.

Funny, I had a great reply typed up and my connection logged out. Oh well... the point of my reply was; That I never expected Mike to run out and buy a T1. And, I already know WHAT a T1 is, what it does, it's rates, etc.etc. And to add to your post, I've got two $50 CSUs sitting here in my office... "hundreds of dollars" is a bit over-the-top. Unless your speaking of a Paradyne CSU nest, or some kind of Multiplexer (MUX) device tied to a DS3. Even an Adtran MX2800 is around $600 and it's channelizes (28) T1s!

... but, it's ALL a moot point, as Mike wasn't going to run out and order a T1 (let alone a DS3), nor did I expect him to. ...and hopefully you didn't either. So why the redundancy in posts? I don't get it.
