I use Emperor Aquatics UV for my pond... very happy with it. I bought one for my saltwater tank, but not setup yet. If you need one, contact a guy in Oceanside, he listed his items on craigslist. Very nice guy to deal with and he has the best price.

      http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/for/2718980044.html

... and he has all kind of pvc reducers, valves etc that you can't find from the local stores... all of his fittings are schedule 80 vs. schedule 40.

According to aqua uv, its advised to replace the bulb yearly for sw, longer for koi ponds and fw. I notice it says you have a quiet one 6000. That's a beasty pump andyou can probably manifold it off your return with a gate valve and not sacrifice much flow

I do not believe installing a UV filter on your system will do anything at all for getting rid of ich. The only thing you can do is run your system fallow (ie sans fish) for several months to kill off the life cycle of the parasite. Even after you do that I can almost guarantee you that your PBT will get ich once in a while. Also, even if you use a UV filter at its rated capacity I think it is a waste of money.

I did run a UV when I had an ich outbreak, and I do believe it helped in wiping out any free floating parasites.
They also help in ridding nuissance algaes, they can actually make your water cleaner.
However I took mine off when it seemed my pod population was decreasing, and that seemed to turn around as soon as I did.
Right now after my swap, and disturbing my sand bed, I'm going through a mini cycle, and suddenly have film algae.
I may put my UV back on for a short spell to help take care of that, but once that has settled I'll take it back off as I have a mandarin pair that need pods, and that is my only reason for removing it, that and you shouldn't need it after time.

Your going to get a lot of different answers about running a UV. I would recommend getting a smaller pump, something 200-350GPH. IMO

I had a UV help with ich before. But it was on a small tank, and almost came out to a 1 to 1, watt to gallon, ratio. No one is going to spend that kind of money sizing a UV for a large tank, I would guess

To JT Milstead: When you say that you recommend a smaller pump are you referring to the return pump that I have now? I do have some questions regarding this issue as well but mabey I should create a new thread as it pertains to. Larry M did my drilling of my tank and we had just discussed some things in regards to the flow just last Wednesday as I was @ his house picking up some LR and a clean up crew.

I must have been confused. I thought the quiet one was for the uv sterilizer.

No the QuietOne 6k is my primary and only Pump running in the system. Anyway I don't want to confuse eveyone with all of my rookie questions so I'll start a new thread regarding the situation I'm having.

      Mike A,

Tee off your return pump with the valve to run the UV... you do not need another pump. The key is, you do not want to let the water pass through the UV too fast.

Since your pump is very strong, tee it off to run 1/3 or 1/2 of the flow to the UV... depending on how big the UV is. Plumbing the return system in the way that you can bypass the UV without shutting off the main return line completely.

.... you need a ball valve before and a ball valve after the UV to control the flow or be able to shut off the UV.

I highly recommend the Emperor Aquatics UV, reasonable price... cheaper than AquaUV and has bigger canister than AquaUV... since you live in North County, check out the link I provided above, contact John ( I believe that his name)... come and check the UV out... well, if you need a UV. If you do not need one... ignore what I typed.

Just want to share my thoughts/ideas. The whole idea of this hobby is to save $$$.

PS: I do believe the UV work on some parasites and algae... not sure about the ich!

I have to say, I put my UV back on yesterday mainly to help rid the film algae I've been getting since my swap, and boy, just one day and already a big difference.
The help they do w/ ich I can't swear to, seemed it really helped when I had it, but boy they sure do help rid algae issues, especially if you run very low flow.
This is a very good thing to add if you swapped and expect any sort of mini cycle IMO.
After my tank has cleared up I'll most likely take it off again to rebuild my pod population, as I'm pretty certain it does hinder that.
