I did not know that there is a thread with this topic or else I would not have made a similar thread.

Anyway, the tank in my office suffered from the blackout.

I tried to go to Home Depot for the generator and all were sold out. I went to Petco to try to buy the battery powered air pump and it was also sold out.

This morning I came back into my office and was sad by the fatality count.

      1. One flame angel
      2. One flasher wrasse
      3. Two lyretail anthias
      4. One big cleaner shrimp

If my tank was at my home, I think that I would have done a better job. Since my tank in is my office, I had to go home with the family. Before I went home, I did tried to stir the tank about every 15 minutes. At least I bought some time for all the other fish that did survived. Only 5 survived out of 9.

All the coral survived but can't say the same for the fish. UPS units only lasted 4 hours with just a pump attached to them.

Yellow Coris Wrasse jumped out of the tank shortly before the outage ( i think he knew what was coming and went for a quick death )

      1. Male Oblique Lined Dottyback
      2. Orchid Dottyback Trio (whole 20G tank crashed)
      3. 2 week old Oblique Lined Dottyback fry (about 4 dozen)
      4. All of my rotifer, brine shrimp, and zooplankton cultures crashed (about 12 total)
      5. Probably have 20 dead cardinalfish tonight (no live food to feed them and haven't been fed since yesterday morning)

I have to say the worst part is the smell coming from all the tanks right now. It smells like the beach, and not in a good way.

I have a 125 gal tank packed with fish and none of them died, no power running whatsoever inside the tank. Kind of worried though after 7 hrs without power; the only thing wrong was during that time some of the fishes start breathing heavily. Sorry for those whose fish didn't make it.

Let me check when I get home but should have some live brine to help with the cardinal fish

instead of driving up to irvine. Next time try to siphon gas out of your car before driving up to irvine.

We had a generator at the shop but couldn't get enough gasoline to keep it powered for very long! Drove up to Irvine, to get gas, and on the way back down, power turns back on! Lol! Everything seems to be doing just fine.

Nothing in my tank died... all is well.

And for those who used 12V Inverters from their cars, are genius. Especially because they aren't noisy like a generator, and can be moved into the house (if your able to remove your car battery). SMART!!

I know it's not much (and hindsight), but an airstone and a powerhead is all you really need. Some of those inverters are junk, but get one... test it, and hopefully next time your home or in the area (not on vacation). I think "how long your tank can survive without any electrical" depends heavily on the size of your tank, and your bioload. It seems some tanks crashed hard, when others had no problem (for similar downtime duration).

I myself will always have a generator fueled and ready. It's the CHEAP way to secure your livestock. An $800 generator would have paid for itself in some of your posts.

My fish all have names. I can't imagine losing them due to some idiot who "tripped the breaker" over in AZ somewhere!! (I know that's downplaying it, but you get the point).

I had a few that are deceased from the outage last night. Power went out at 3:45 in Linda Vista so we closed the office, headed home which is usually a 10 min drive, an hour later I was finally at the liquor store next to my house to get ice. I kept the tank cool until it started to cool down a few hours later thank goodness. The power went back on close to 3:00am and when the lights went on, I glanced and was like crap. The following tenants passed last night. Such a shame and sad day.
1: Flame Hawk that was totally cool
      2: Tang
      3: Yellow watchman goby
      4: Tiger goby

For all you guys that lost fish, you should look into a reimbursement, because it was someone's fault that the power went out. for example on base here we got instructions on how to get our food money reimbursed, maybe the city can pay for the fish too

***? Why would they only be able to get reimbursed? What about us regular, tax paying civilians?
