Holy smokes! What was it 551 yellow tangs? That's insane. What a shame.

The beginning of the end of our hobby as we know it. The current administration has already put a bullseye on the industry.

Soon we will be paying $300 for a yellow tang...and $20lb for liverock...forget your hallides, you will be 100% LED.

As disgusting as this is...it still doesn't compare to puppy mills.

Thats a damn shame. Sometimes I think I should just spend my money on vacations to dive and see these guys rather than shack them up in a tank at home. Its a travesty this would happen, but im sure more than 610 tangs die in peoples homes per year. Its a business and we are all consumers. But this sure does make you think about the environment right?

Ouch, 551 of my favorite fish. So sad.

To some people just 610 fish, to others 610 little lives. That Blue chick from Pandora would kill somebody.

      A Damn shame.

There is a big thing right now in Hawaii to stop all aquarium fish collection. All the dive charters out there are saying that the yellow tang are disappearing because of over collection. I think its a good idea. At the very least they should imply strict collection restrictions.

This was posted on the story. I don't necessarily agree, but he has a point. (I remember when the yellowtail was super abundent here off our own shores.......)

"Its fascinating that people get 'outraged' over a few hundred dead yellow tangs, but have no qualms about the millions of tons of fish taken from commercial fishing for food. I guess yellow tangs get more support because they are cuter than sardines or mackerel?"

I know it would suck for all of us in the hobby, but I am a big fan of much stricter importation on wild collections (not complete, just really limiting) that would drive up cultivation of these species. This sort of story is horrid, but considering how many yellow tangs probably die each day across the country in both stores and hobbyists tanks, I'm guessing it's not exactly a tiny number.
With the exception of a few species (a number which is growing thankfully) most species are costwise prohibitive from greater research into captive breeding and rearing. Higher priced imports could change this, yielding even more captive bred animals. Surely this would be a great thing, right?

And agreed Tech-the whole food fish vs ornamental fish is a huge problem. There's a bunch of arguments about our farm bred salmon (and how they actually are more environmentally detrimental than wild caught) as compared to much of europe which utilzes carp in the way we do salmon.

I've never really been into the eatting of fish or bottom feeders, so I think killing fish is as dumb as killing bears, lions, elephants, etc. for game. I do, however believe that you need animal protein to live a heathly life, so don't look down upon people who choose to eat fish, as I choose to eat beef.

There are also people out there that would compare these dead yellow tangs to the fish that die during commercial fishing, and not see what the big deal is. Some people don't understand whats going at the beach besides their tanlines.

The admin needs to be carefull not to make restriction so bad that it creates a black market. That would be very very bad for the fish, corals and everyone. Im sure there will be the typical knee jerk reaction from the admin and go soo far extreme the LFS, wholesalers and the hobby will be crippled. This was a very bad thing and whoever did this should go to jail if they are found guilty of poor collection or holding. Just aweful to see those fish laid out like that. Hopefully whatever comes of this will NOT be purely for politcal gain.
