Looks good Tom! Since you asked, a couple of pointers:

      - Color Temp: Check your white balance as the lighting change throughout the day. Sometimes, you want a bit cooler or warmer look to highlight certain features but be careful of the warmness of halogen bulbs in the latter shots.

      - Composition: It's difficult to completely filter out people and such in a public place like Sea Port but be careful of distracting out-of-focus items (like people walking or bright red cars).

      - Focus: In some of the shots with lower ambient lighting, there's some focusing issues as to be expected. You can use a faster lens, a tripod or better yet, off camera flash!

      - Lighting: Obviously, most of photography is about lighting. The on camera flash can only do so much. Have you invested in an external flash? If you don't want to take the financial plunge, using reflectors and such can add great lighting to your photos with much less money but strobing is an eventuality if you want to really get into portraiture!

      thanks for chiming in Minh!

yes i've thought about the external flash, but i just got the camera and it's a chunk of my paycheck so i'm going slowly.

yeah, i still gotta work on the lighting. i used a white card to custom adjust the white balance, but still gotta get better

Good start Tom! Minh gave some good advice. The thing that strikes me as the most inconsistent is lighting (expected since you're outdoors and later in the day). You'll want to pay attention not only to the 'temperature' of the light, but the wash as well. An external light source and some adjustments in speed should help with that. Keep it going!

For sure! Great point! Learning to control your exposure will give much better results for absolutely free! The histogram is a great tool to use to stop losing detail to over or under exposure.
