it looks cool and all but is it really worth $100+ for ONE polyp?
I think they auctioned one polyp at the cfm for over $200. I suppose you could ask the same question about all the LE corals.
I bid one one right before I found out I was moving. Sold for 180. The trick is, wait until about a minute left and then put the bid in for the max you would pay. That's how I got beat. I posted too early and the guy I outbid did a last minute bid on me.
Thats how you win on eBay cause most people think they're clear and won, then you swoop in
Edit:
There is no such thing as a "trick" to buying on eBay. Simply put in your highest bid you are willing to spend up front and be done with it. If someone else is willing to spend more, then they will win. Nothing tricky about it. As long as your max bid is higher than everyone else's max bid, it will keep bumping it up and keeping you on top. Doing things at the last second does absolutely nothing except build the hype and get you really excited and leads to you spending more than you originally wanted to spend. There is no trick to 'outsmarting the bidding process" at the last minute, if someone else steals it from you at the last minute, its a simple matter of they bid more than you did.

Use your cell to call people (like me for example) Chris, your all thumbs on that keyboard dude! LOL. E-bay is a bummer sometimes. Max bid then walk away. Have heard that people have bots that bid for them towards the last minutes of an auction, not sure of the reality of that though. Purple Hornets originally went for over 300 for a single polyp.

Lol, you're right Brian. That's what happens when I'm typing on my phone! I edited/added to my above post.
Even if such bidding-bots do exist, it wouldn't matter as long as your bid was still higher. It doesn't matter WHEN the bid is cast, simply who's is higher.
Suppose the auction is at $10. You put in your maximum bid of $100. The auction still remains at $10. Then, someone else bids $25, since your max bid is higher it automatically raises the bid to $26, so that you're still in the lead. Later someone else bids $97 --since your max bid is still higher it automatically raises it to $98, so you're still in the lead. The second someone else bids $101 (more than you), you lose.
Even of you type in $1000 your bid will only be what it needs to to be higher than the highest bid. For example. If my max bid is $100 and people start trying to out bid at the last moment and only bid up to $50, I would win the auction at $51.01 or whatever the bid increment is. I wouldn't have to pay the $100 unless someone bids up to $99.
if someone really wants it bad they may bid 300
