      Dental work for cats?

So my cat needs about $750 of dental work done. The vet I take him to says his dental work needed is in Stage 3 (out of 4 possible stages), yet in the same breath they'll say his teeth isn't horrible yet they have see better. So I don't know what to believe. All I know is I think I have to get 3-4 more opinions before I go dumping $750 on my cat.

Does anyone know of any places that give discount vet care or animal dentistry?

Do some checking w/ the local rescue groups, they should have some good resources for you.

I have done this procedure and paid no where near that. Second..I wouldn't do it again. They over drugged my cat and it was a mess but didn't really look any better IMO. However you should be brushing your cats teeth on your own...PITA i know but... Third there is a place that is by me.. (not who I used) but who i thought of trying that is way cheaper! Ill find the number and hit them up for a quote.

      Hey Aly,

Yeah I am definitately going to start brushing his teeth like TONIGHT! As for the dental work he needs, I think its more than just a routine brushing than Dirty Paws Pet Wash does.

They wanted to do some work on my wifes 17 year old cat for 450 bucks. I told the vet that that's an insane amount to pay for an old cat like that and i rather put him down, then he was able to do the work for 140.

A couple things from my experience:

      1. Cats are very susceptible to getting blood born disease from bad teeth. Bad stuff can get into their blood stream by way of infected gums.

      2. Look into health insurance for your cat. We have it at Banfield (inside Petsmart). Routine tooth cleaning is part of the comprehensive care. You will also save quite a bit if the cat has any real medical needs. People laugh about pet health insurance, but if you are too cheap or too lazy to take proper care of your pet, then you should not have one to begin with.

      3. I wouldn't hesitate to get multiple opinions on anything like that. It is a lot of money and there is no reason to believe that dishonest people don't work in the pet care industry, just like everywhere else.

      Thanks Dave,

I'll definitely check out Pet Insurance and see what it covers. Since he has dirty/f'ed up teeth already....That'll probably qualify is a "pre-existing condition".

When we first got insurance for one of our cats, it was because he needed minor surgery. The Vet actually pointed out to us that we could save a bunch of money on the procedure if we bought the insurance because the surgery would be covered. They don't base it on the health of the animal when signing up. I think you would be OK.

Thats nice to know that pet insurance is not as crooked (spelling?) as Human Health insurance!!!

Oh wow, really? That is awesome. I will definitely look into it then. I did a quote online for VPI Insurance and they said it'd cost me $45 a month for maximum coverage for my cat. Sounds like a good deal for me! I'll keep my fingers crossed.

That sounds very close to what I paid at Banfield.

Pcon, out of curiosity, is the vet located in Poway. If it's the one that tried to charge me that much to get my dogs teeth cleaned, its probably the same place. I got my dogs teeth done, had a tooth extracted, had the vet scope his peter to find out he hadn't been neutered, and had them remove his nuts for 450 at a place in Escondido. Call around. You know what the cat needs. Its a business, so put them against each other since times are tough for pet care due to the economy.
