I have been working on this for hours and I can not seem to get it just right. I think I am going to take a break till tomorrow before I go crazy. I did not glue anything up for my dry runs and that may be one problem, another is I did not find a gate valve at HD.

I am finding that a 1" pipe in a 1.5" pipe is restricting the flow too much, causing the water to drain into the 1" pipe making tons of noise. Also, 3/4" pipe is a little too small causing a horrible noise as well.

      AHHHHHHHHHHHH.

It's gonna be tough to get it right without a gate valve. They sell them at Aquatic Warehouse.

How does the gate valve work. Does it restrict the water flow into the main pipe? Because I think there already is too much restriction.

try putting a mesh net over the top, thats what i did on my 60 and it worked well to quiet the sucking sound and it was a similar setup.

I tried the net and it did quiet it greatly; however, the perfectionist doesn't want to settle for close enough. Come tomorrow and I may be saying something different.

I would think that you'd want to use a 1.5" main pipe with a 3/4" emergency pipe inside. The emergency pipe should stick up out of the main pipe by a couple of inches. Then you use the gate valve to restrict the flow so that it is just below the top of the 3/4" pipe. HTH.

      Talking

After taking a break it all seems so much clearer. The gate valve is the most important piece and of course the one I did not have at the time.

      Thumbs up

Thank you everyone. It is as quiet as it can be, just the hum of the pump.

Also, just wanted to add, as Dave pointed out previously, you'll just want to make sure that your main drain pipe (the one above the filter sock) is all the way under the waterline.

It look like you run Gen-X 6000 1300gph pump for the return, maybe that is the reason why you can not get it quiet in the first time,1300gph with only one drain will rush the water down too fast and creat water fall noise, you either have to go with dual drain or change to smaller return pump in order to control the noise level better.
