The problem with this is that the walmart jugs tend to slowly leak air from their little air opening.

I'd glue it shut if i were you.

I have essentially the same thing, but put a swamp cooler valve in so it doesn't matter if the little hole is open. Also from HD. Works the same way your toilet ball does. 2 years no worries. Never overfills.
