They are safe, I just leave them.

Well, I guess it depends on the amount of food they have. They are filter feeders and get nutrients from the water, so if you have high nutrients, they'll grow fast.
Rudy is correct, the only thing bad about high reproduction rates of sponges is that it indicates an excss of food in the water.
