For about 100 bucks more you can get the XSi kit online @ Costco w/free memory card offer.
      http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...-Cat83&topnav=

Or simply go to the store and get the kit for $799.99 with no memory card.

before i bought my original D80 i went to Ritz and played with both of them. When your holding them both you can really tell that the nikon feels like a more solid build. Thats not saying either take better pictures, and this is about the 10000000000th time this has been debated amongst photographers!

Here is a good link to read through..

Here are some pictures taken by my Pentax k10d
weather proof and decently priced> you can get one now with a kit lens for like 600-800. BUt the new Pentax k20d is 14.2 mgpxl and also shared the weatherproofing.

Just remember that about 50% of the image quality is the glass (lens), 40% photographer, and 10% body. Different bodies mainly allow you to mount different glass. Of course the technology is better from one to the other so it transfers data a little faster, gives you more control over the composition, and sensor technology will have an affect on noise in the image. Most of an image can be adjusted during post processing without ill effects on the image quality. The sharpness of an image depends mostly on the glass, not the body. Personally, I believe the best way to choose a camera is to go down the following list:

      1. What type of photos do I want to take? This question will lead you down the path of which company makes the ideal lenses for your style of photography.

      2. What's my budget? I know now what type of photos and have an idea of what brand I want to start leaning toward, but do they offer anything in my price range that will give me the control I need and offer quality glass that's in my budget range.

      3. Which body feels most comfortable? You'll be taking lots of photos for long periods of time, I personally won't go hiking up Mt. Everest in flip flops so if it's not comfortable, it should be wiped from the list.

      4. What accessories are offered for this body? Are there wireless shutter releases offered for my macro work? The bundled neck strap isn't comfortable, is there a thicker more padded one available?

      5. Vibration Control in the lens or in the body? This one should really be part of 3. If they VC in the body goes bad, there goes your day of shooting. If the VC in the lens goes bad, throw on your other lens and get the broken one fixed when you return home.

      6. Once all of those factors are looked at, you'll find, like I did, that there is no better brand than Nikon. LOL...
