Thumbs up A.t.o.

Just wanted to post about my satisfaction with the A.T.O. (auto top off) by JBJ. It does what it says and my specific gravity has been pegged at 1.025 since my last water change. I cant believe that I used to add a gallon a day by hand. I bought this after my salinity got out of wack, added too much R.O. and watched my birdsnest shrivel up. Since stability is key to a happy reef I suggest this product to anyone. If yours happens to come with the buzzer turned on (it is loud and anoying) there is a switch inside the controler, all you have to do is remove the four screws on the back and flip it to off. It also has a sensor to tell you when your reservoir is low and it will not allow your fill pump to turn on. Best $100 I have spent in a while and I wish I had bought it years ago.

      Update:

Hmm I heard water splashing today while sitting at my computer, thank God I was home, and my ATO was overfilling / about to overflow my tank. Gona have to keep a close eye on this....

Yeah it is easy. The pump I bought from Marine Depot as well didn't cut it. I went to Home Depot and got a Beckett fountain pump ($23.60 somin with tax) that is rated to push water 3 feet in a fountain 130 gph. I added the small attachement and bought some clear vinyl tubing 3/8" outside diameter / 1/4" inside, (< $4 for 10 feet) threw it in my reservoir with the shut off sensor and watched the magic happen. So total cost was < $130 and 5-10 minutes to install.

Funny that someone just posted on my ATO product review cause I have a nice story for you. This POS. Man you have to keep up on maintaining the cleanliness of the floats. I didn’t do this last week and of course added 4 gallons of kalk filled water to my res... usually add a max of 2 and the float got stuck. I came home to a white tank and a pH of 8.8 maybe pushing 9. So genius and impatient person that I am diluted some muriatic acid and turkey basted it into my fuge. So I decided on squirt wasn’t enough so after 2 I tested my pH again. Now I am freaking out... I used to clean pools and adding the smallest amount of this stuff will drastically change the pH of a spa (500-600 gallons give or take) so I annihilated my buffer and lowered my pH to 7.6 or so. Then it was time to add bicarbonate followed by a 20% water change of salt that I mixed for an entire 20 minutes to try to stabalize everything and bring the specific gravity from 1.0245 back to 1.026. Long story short I don’t suggest doing chemistry / balancing pH in your fish tank with living organisms present. It has been a week and I haven’t lost anything yet but my alk is sitting at 12.5 dkH and my pH is at 8.2. Crazy thing is I added a CBB the day before and he is doing great now. I got him eating frozen and even some flake. I bet I gave him a headache with the pH swing though, I feel bad. pH is a log scale the hydroxide / hydronium swings in that hour was thousands fold. I feel super lucky... fingers crossed.
