Free Pistol Shrimp to whoever can help me catch him!

He's big, he's red, and he's stressing me out! Therefore, he's got to go. I'm in the process of upgrading to a larger setup and I don't want to wait until I empty my current setup to get him out unless I absolutely have to. I got him a couple of weeks ago and since then he's dug the entire New York subway system worth of tunnels under my rockwork. Everyday I go to work wondering if I'm going to come home and find my tank shattered into pieces all over my floor. I bought some rubble when I bought him because I knew that they like to dig burrows and line the entrance to their cave with shells and/or rubble. I did this in hopes that he wouldn't kill any of my snails or hermits. The good news is that he hasn't killed anything so far that I could find. The bad news is that he has dug way more than I could have imagined. He's probably around 2-3" in size and looks like this: http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/p...fm?pCatId=2129
Even though liveaquaria.com says that these guys will pair up with gobies, I was told (when I bought him) that the red ones generally live alone and rarely ever pair up. In case you were wondering. Let me know if you're up to the challenge.

      Cheers,

      Ryan

      LOL! Great post.

I like the way they get between two rocks and build a roof from rubble, and then cover the 'roof' with sand, making tunnels out of nothing. Best thing I ever put in my tank, but they can dig! Mine is HUGE and when he is in the mood he can move a LOT of sand.

Nice one slowturtle "I like where your heads at man" (in my best Vince Vaughn voice). That's funny that you mentioned that idea because the thought had crossed my mind. The only problem is figuring out how to get the mantis out afterwards. I tried using one of those mantis traps to catch him but the only thing I managed to catch was a few hermit crabs.

      Question pistol

Unless you put your lr on top of ls. I have pair of tiger pistol shrimps in my tank, was in 55g, now in 90g. I saw the female carried eggs but never seen baby pistols )). They doing just fine. push sand from one side to another and back (I have 2inches of crushed coral... created tunnels all over, move rubbles...good for the sand bed...sorry that you have to let it go, and good luck on catching it (When I move livestock from 55g to 90g, they were the last guys I caught).

It probably just needs a little inspiration to pair up with a goby. A little mood music...some soft actinic lighting to soften it's coloring and bang!...instant romance...until slowturtle brings over his mantis!

I have a smithii mantis in my tank - after he finished killing the CBS and all snails and hermits, he hasn't hurt a thing. I feed him "sea snails" that I get from the Lucky Seafood store on Mira Mesa Blvd - about $1 for a handful every other week.

Mantis is better that a pistol - doesn't push sand and are cool to watch. I replenish the cleanup crew about every 6-months...takes him about that long to kill everything.

      Go mantis!

Sorry about that everybody, I appologize for lagging on replying to your pm's. I had some unrelated drama pop up that I had to deal with. Anyways, all pm's have now been responded to. Cheers, Ryan.
