Many have already heard about this, but I still hear people talking about buying expensive lighting for their fuges, so I'll throw it out there! Home Depot, sells 6500k natural daylight compact fluorescent bulbs that are encased inside a spotlight shaped glass housing. They are intense and they can be hung from the top of the inside of your stand or clamped onto the side of the fuge using a clamp fixture I have two of them (more than enough) and my macroalgae is out of control. They only use 14watts a piece and are completely cool to the touch so they don't transfer heat to the water and they cost like $7 bucks. I have even seen people light their entire aquarium with these bulbs and blue actinics.
Any way they work great and I wanted to pass it on. Got the info from this site where you can also see the older version of the light.
