why use a canister at all? Run a sump with bio media. If you want you can always run a filter sock on the drains

canisters will all leak over time, fluval leaks, renas have bad impellers. ehiem is expensive as hell.

if you want to go all out with a FW tank drill it and get a sump

I'm w/ Redeye & Dakota on the Renas. I used Fluvals on my FW tanks for many years, but tried a Rena XP3, and never looked back. The XP3 is still giving fine service on my FAWLR (that's fish and anemones with live rock)

Jerehmy - We don't use sumps on FW planted tanks because you want to minimize surface disturbance when pumping in CO2. If you aren't using CO2, however, surface turbulance is good because it maximizes co2. Clear as mud?

I was going to use a sump but I thought it'd be too noisy. I will also be having a CO2 setup.

With a 60g Cube do you think it would be enough to run a 55g rated marineland? I realize the tank won't really have 60 gallons in it and the plants will help out a ton but....I always like the idea of over filtering..any opinions?

Anyone ever run those eheim classics? Feedback would be much appreciated if you have. Thanks.

I ran an Eheim Pro II 2028 on my 100g for 3+ years with no problems at all...not sure if it's considered a classic. My tank housed HUGE ole' cichlids that crapped a ton and the Eheim kept it all clean. I have no use for it anymore and it just sits in the garage plus I still have the original box.

LMK if your interested...will trade for corals.

i would not use a sump........a Ehiem Filter should be enough.

good luck with that though FW planted tank, aqua scaping is hard stuff.

i have a fluval 204 on my 20g no problems for the past 2 years
