      Aptasia DYI terminator thread

The problem with joe's juice and kalk and other solutions is that you have to hit the aptasia several days in a row to completly eradicate those little *******s. If you have a deep tank it is a PIA to do.

      Current project:

Get a huge medical style syringe of at least 10 to 20 or more mls.
Use a small amount of flexible airline tubing to attach this to a long hard airline tubing.
This way you have more maneuverability and better visibility when using the hardline tubing.

I'm grabbing a few large syringes at work tomorrow. Marde---I'll grab one for you just in case your interested.

Sounds like a great idea, Brad. These could also function as target feeders. Accessibility to nice medical grade syringes that last awhile is usually the limiting factor. But of course, being in your profession, this sounds like a great project for you. Please keep us updated!

I've said it before and i'll say it again.

Mix a teaspoon with some saltwater. drizzle into the mouth of an aiptasia with a large syringe, or even one of those medicine droppers. Once the aiptasia has accepted the little bits into it's mouth, you squirt some over the anemone.

You will never see that aiptasia again.

I believe Brad is well aware of the use of kalk to elimiate aiptasia (read the first part of his post). Unforunately, a medicine dropper isn't so practical in a 130g where the biggest aiptasia is behind a 50lbs piece of rock 24" bellow water surface and 30" from the front of the tank surrounded by huge coral colonies that won't like extra kalk juices. That's where the syringe/rigid tubing comes into play. Plus, you don't have to get your hands wet

I did this exact thing a while back. With the rigid tubing and 50 syringe and all. It works far better than reaching in with your hand but it's still a pain if the aiptasia are hidden. The other problem I had was collateral damage. I didn't realize I had my prized acan sitting well below one of the anemones I was about to blast. That really pissed off my acan!

Actually, my aptasia issues are 90 percent gone using the Kalk you gave me. The problem is that you have to repeat at least 2 to 3 x to eradicate the problem totally. I have a 30 inch tank and am not a big fan of ruining the water by putting my armpits in.

PS: current should be turned off for awhile when using Kalk or pickeling lime. THe consistency should be thick to avoid collateral damage.

PPS: if the aptasia are hidden then I don't care. I just don't want them stinging other corals or getting out of control.

If you use a needle and inject white vinegar right into the aptasia body, you'll never see it again. But that only works where you can get to them. The airline tubing works great on all the hard to reach places. If you need to bend it just hold it over the stove, let it warm up and bend it.

Cant find medical syringes - go into a cooking gadgets store (or even Wal MArt) and get a injection baster. It is a big syringe used to inject marinade into meat before cooking it. NOT a turkey baster!

Do you guys get Luer lock syringes? I had some of those before and had trouble fitting the tubing on them, both the hard and flexible. Arent the 19 Gauges filter needles?

No pharmacy in SD would sell me a hypothermic syringe! I had to get my friend at Long's Drugs to snag me one. By the time I would have gotten it the Peppermint Shrimps took care of all of the aiptasia. So my solution:
