      Glo fish

I believe they are injected with a flourescent gene from some type of coral. You can order them from scientific supply companies like 'Carolina Biological Supply' I think. Not sure about any California restrictions - are you looking at a specific type/ company's fish? I know I've seen them in scientific supply catalogs before.

Those do indeed look like the dyed variety of fish (much the same as dyed corals n such), which does mean that the colors wear off. Now the ethics and/or aesthetics of such "enhancements" are one thing (IMO not so much), but should one desire such animals the asian LFS' would be the most likely place to find these things. I've never seen this done to danios before but have seen dyed versions both "albino" tiger barbs and black skirt tetras for years.

The Glofish version zebra danios is indeed a genetically augmented animal which according to the wisdom of fish and game is illegal in this state. Glofish fluoresce green under exposure to UV light, like those cats in the news the last week or so -and again according to the rules Fish and Game operates under these cats would be illegal to own in this state as well -if one were to want such a cat.

I had two just a couple months ago!!!! I sold them cuz they stunk up my garage pretty bad. Had them for over a year, very cool but they do smell very bad, and they are pooping machines. Their poop sticks like cement to anything se be ready to do some hard cage scrubbing..

BTW Cali is the state w/highest ferret population, and yes, they are illegal for some very stupid reasons...
