Ecotech Marine Vortech powerhead with wireless wave driver

Well, I never thought I would spend over $300-400 on a powerhead but I understand when you want new technology, you are going to pay a price. I purchased 2 of these powerheads, one used which turned out to be an older model and I upgraded to the wireless driver. Having used Seios and Koralias previously to these powerheads, I definitely feel I've made a solid investment. The wireless drivers are very easy to set up and have 4 different modes you can put them in and you still have the option to adjust your pumps to produce anywhere from 300gph to 3000gph. My glass tank is about 3/4" which is the max suggested for using these since the base of the powerhead mounts to the outside of the tank and uses a strong magnet to mount the propeller side. They can be noisy at first until you adjust them. I can tell you that there is definitely a difference between the used one I purchased which you can definitely hear and the newer model which seems to be perfectly quiet. They produce an unbelievable amount of flow and mine are in an 8' long tank which just the 2 vortechs produce a significant amount of surface agitation. I also appreciate the option for a battery backup. They claim to produce up to 30 hours or 15 hours if you have 2 vortechs hooked up. You can obviously purchase additional back ups as well but they run $150 and are not small or light.

      Pros:
      Easy to mount/configure drivers
Wireless wave driver eliminates need to purchase wave machine and does not just turn on/off your pumps.
adjustable flow control --300 to 3000gph
      solid craftmanship, not cheap plastic
      Size, much smaller than Tunze's
      Battery backup option
No AC/wires inside the tank/eliminates heat transfer
      easy to clean

      Cons:
      Price
Not able to rotate direction of flow
      older models can be louder
not able/recommended to use on glass thickness over 3/4" currently

I'm getting mine next week, I think

Can't wait to test it out... the battery back-up IMO is a MUST. It just completes the entire package and gets you some extra piece of mind just in case something happened w/the power.

I agree about the battery backup. After spending a few hundred on one of these bad boys, you might as well get the full set just in case of emergy power outages. I'll write up a full review once I get mine.

I have 2 of these in a 5' tank. Talk about flow. I also have the battery backup. Spent some major cash on these but I do like them.

      One problem,

I had one of them keep stalling on me. It finally broke. Just the part in the water, not the motor. It just stopped, and a plastic part inside snapped. This one I bought from AW so they sent it back and I got it back today 2-3 weeks later. It seems to work great now. They do have a 1 year warranty, so hopefully it wont break down after that.

The dude at AW told me he has had one other return...for something to do with the controller box.

Overall I love these pumps, the undertow is amazing! I have had them for about 3 months.

AW should have replaced the pump for you while the other one was being sent out.

Thank god I listened to my friend and went with Tunzes! Is this just a isolated incident? Sorry I didn't read all the posts? Nick thanks for this warning.

He had a 3/4" tank. You do not use the pin spacers when your tank is this thick. I think that this had to add to the problem. Also with the tank being so thick, no heat transfered into the water keeping the heat in the acrylic. This seems to be a Vortech issue, and this should have been tested further by Vortech IMO.

Vortech also stated that his tank was not built up to the specs it should have been. I think this is bs, and they should compensate him. In his last post he did mention that they are giving him 3 options to get this resolved. I'm sure he will post the outcome.

So far it seems to be isolated.

While I have no opinion on what they should do for compensation, I do not think improper tank construction should be dismissed. That's a BIG tank!! That's a LOT of water! That's a LOT of stress/pressure!
