What can rip a sandsifting star apart?

I just noticed my Sand sifting star is TORN APART. I mean dismemberd. What can do that? I don't know how long he's been dead, but is there a killer I should be worrying about? Or did it die and the cleaner crew took care of it and started to dismantle it? (I have no crabs) just bristle worms and snails.

Natural star death probably. They are brittle when they are deceased, so he is fish food now.

Most likely from dying or is dead from salinity or pH swings. They are very sensitive

Was it in your 24g? I thinkt he most likey thing is that it starved, but maybe it died for other reasons. And then decayed. I have had other starfish, and they can even start to 'rot' and look torn apart while they are still sort of alive. But, they can't recover from that.
