      Let there be light

Well, it looks like a couple of us have questions about moonlights for our tanks. There are many different kinds to buy or you can even build your own. I personally don't have the spare time to build a set, so I am going to purchase one. My question is, what type do you use and how do you like them? If you have experience with the icecap or PFO leds, I would also like to know how well these work.

      Thanks

I have one of the 1W PFO flat LED moonlights. That thing is sooo bright, if I look directly at it, I see spots for the next minute or two. I use one over the center of my tank. I think it's enough. I don't simulate any sort of moon cycle. Just on for 10 or 11 hours.

Are the PFO leds white or blue?

Thanks for posting this. I saw your question in my thread and asked again, but no luck There seem to be so many choices for moonlights, but some of them have to be junk. I'd like to know which ones to avoid as well as which ones are good.

I'm not sure what you are looking for in this thread. Life expectancy? Other than it being on or off, I don't expect my moon light to do anything else. Were you looking for more of a simulated moon cycle thing?

Nope, don't really care about moon cycle simulation or the sort. I am just interested in a nice set of moonlights that provide nice color and brightness for my tank. Long life is also a plus.

I'm interested in which ones shine to the bottom (18" +) and don't crap out after a couple months. Other factors are ease of use for my canopy and power usage/linkability.

I bought a pair of the lights along with the cycling controller. I was going to post about this product, but never got around to it. The whole setup works as expected and installation is easy. I really like it. But, I've had a problem with the adapter where it plugs into the device. It clips in place, but after a while, it doesn't hold. So, I'm keeping it in place with a rubber band! After swapping it out for a new one (one year warranty on parts), the connection worked until I moved the setup to my upgrade tank. Now I'm back at square one with a rubber band. I'll try to post a pic of what I'm talking about in a separate thread to see if any electrically inclined people might have some input on fixing it.

Oh, OK, well, it's easy to install (has holes for screws). It has a quick disconnect mechanism, so I don't have to unplug the whole thing when I remove my canopy. It is very bright like I said, reached the bottom of my 31" tall tank no problem. The only thing I don't like is that the AC adapter has the plug prongs sticking directly out of it, so it takes up space when it's plugged into a power strip like my DC8.

If you are looking for a good deal on Moonlights and want some really good ones, da6d2003 has some for sale. They are thelobos.com setups. These are the ones I have. I have 5 led's over 240g tank that is 24" tall and they work awesome! It also has the lunar cycle that IMO is very important. Moonlight can be cheap or expensive, depending on if you buy crap or good ones. The ones SDGUY has are awesome. Very bright!

Seriously! Maybe I could imagine having two MAX. They are that bright! One is enough to let me stumble through my living room after a late night out without having to turn on the room lights
