      !!!!!scripps Water Warning!!!!!

      Folks,

I am a pilot so I thought I would pass on some useful info as to what I saw today. I very frequently fly up on down the coast and today I happened to notice the areas around La Jolla swamped with RED TIDE. I flew right past where many of us all get our water from, and low and behold, the RED TIDE was there as well. So with that being said, well, you get the picture.

      Just a heads up....

Red tide mean higher phosphat in the water right?
I never get my water when it red tide,I wait at least 3 day after that to go get water from Scripp just for safe.In those days like this,I just mix salt water at home with RO-DI water, you can not depend 100% on Scripps water, always have plan B for it.

I have used water during red tide. Everything was fine. Im pretty sure that scripps does not stop using their water in some of their tanks just becuase of red tide. I know the water is also collected from the bottom at the end of the peir so its not collecting surface water where all the algae dwells and blooms.

The intake pipe at the end of the pier is approx. 35' below the surface. This, of course changes by a few feet with the normal tides, but is still pretty deep. I have never had a problem with Scripps waater, regardless of when I collected it. I also don't use it right away. It sits in the barrel for at least a few days. I keep it dark, agitated, and cool. I would guess that any algea still alive in it would probably die in the dark.

I imagine that if indeed you have red tide algae in your Scripps water and you killed them off by letting the water sit several days in the dark with circulation that you would still have the potent toxin to deal with. I guess some carbon would help out in this case.
Either way, I've been using Scripps water in my QT tank and I just got 24 gallons yesterday during the reported red tide bloom. I think it makes sense that we're avoiding contamination at the Pier since it draws from the deeper end. So, I'm going with the advice of the experienced users here.
If my fish die off (clown, Coral beauty, firefish), I'll be sure to post under the heading "Scripps Red Tide Killed My QT Fish!".

I have used the "redtide" water the day of and also a few days after. I have never had an algae bloom or had livestock die because of it.

isn't the scripps water run through some massive filters? wouldn't this negate the effects of a red tide?
