      New National Monument

For all of you Bush haters out there (and the rest of us)...

I am sitting backstage at an IBM meeting here in San Diego listening to Jean Michel Cousteau speak. He just announced to the group here that on June 15th President Bush will be announcing that 140,000 square miles of ocean space surrounding the Hawaiian Islands has been designated as a National Monument and will be protected under Federal law governing our National Parks. His decision to do so was based on a film that he and the First Lady viewed with Cousteau and his foundation people. The film is a Blue Planet sort of film that was illustrating the demise of our coral reefs and open ocean habitats. It should prove to be interesting. Hopefully it won't get mucked up in too much red tape.

If I hated the environment and wanted it all dead, I wouldn't have spent the kind of money I have on my tank.

Actually that is exactly what out tanks our doing. Our tanks are consuming so much of our precious resources (water/electricity) everyday. We (including myself) have managed to rationalize that this hobby is great for the environment, but in reality its not.

DaveMorris: Wow. You got to hear Jean-Michael Cousteau speak. When/where was this convention?

      Funny coincidence.

Bush calls for advanced maritime interests.

WASHINGTON, May 15: U.S. President George Bush detailed his stance on improved maritime interests Tuesday, including a call for membership in a key U.N. group.

Bush, in a statement issued by the White House, called on the Senate to support U.S. membership in the U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea as part of his efforts to promote U.S. maritime interests.

Bush said by joining the international group, the United States would gain advantages such as military mobility across the world's oceans and access to marine resources.

"Accession will promote U.S. interests in the environmental health of the oceans," Bush noted. "And it will give the United States a seat at the table when the rights that are vital to our interests are debated and interpreted."

The president also announced that he had taken steps to protect the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument in Hawaii.

To that end, Bush told the U.S. delegation to the International Maritime Organization to create a proposal for new protective actions.

Translation: We can continue to plunder and rape the oceans...what a guy.

"And it will give the United States a seat at the table when the rights that are vital to our interests are debated and interpreted."
Translation: We can get on the committee and strong arm the rest of the world to do what we want. Idiot America strikes again.
