      Danny's New 90g Pedestial Stand

Danny is going to be adding a new tank to his livingroom in an alcove next to the fireplace. As the big tank, this one will be plumbed through the wall to his outside equipment. The fireplace hearth is about two feet off the grond, the 24" tall tank will sit about 9 1/2" off the hearth which will leave room for about a 9" canopy (still needs to be built). I ran into some design challanges due to the short height of the proposed door, so instead I just made removable panels in front to access the storage space underneath. It still needs to be finished to match Danny's new kithen cabinets but hopefully, he will have this tank up and running in no time.

The face frame is solid maple (soft), as is all mouldings. The sides are 1/4" Baltic Birch plywood over scrap ply I had lying around. The stand will be stained to match the kitchen cabinets.

Rick, I think you are spending too much time on this project and not enough time with your dog. MAN! he looks sad!

Otherwise, great work as always. Curious as to why you assembled the face plates and moulding before staining.

I am using 1/8" birch ply to skin my stand. I hope it comes out close to the same color as the pine canopy. If not, I will use the canopy at work and make a new one for home with the left over ply.

This dog (Tigger) gets more attention than my kids! Doesn't like to be left alone. I guess that's just the way he looks. Anyway, the panels come out so I will just take them out and spray the whole thing at one time. What's the point of staining underneath moulding? I always glue and fasten the mouldings and glue doesn't stick to stain. You just have to be sure and wipe any glue that squeezes out or it won't stain and looks bad. How's your stand coming along? James, you may be able to match the colors closely but the woods will look totally different. You can get self adhesive veneer in birch to put over your canopy if you want a match on the wood and save the time of building a new one. I've never tried this stuff before but it should work fine. Just rough cut a piece, apply it in the drection you want the grain, and cut to size with a razor blade (or flush cut router if you have one). Fine finish all edges with a file. Stain to match!

Glad you like it. If you will be home Tuesday around 5 pm, I'll stop by to match the stain to your cabinets. LMK.

Yeah, the shore dives are getting old. it would be great to go to the kelp beds or to the artificial reefs off PB! See you tomorrow.
