      Metal Halide... upgrade??

When i came into this hobby, T5s were prevalent, with LEDs gaining speed. I currently run an ATI 8 bulb Hybrid Powermodule, which has been an outstanding fixute to this point. However, I have always been intrigued by the growth potential, shimmer, and color of Metal Halides. I am fully aware this is seen as going backward in this hobby, but I don't care. I don't mind the additional consumption on my electric bill or the bulb changes...already do that with the T5s anyway.

I am ignorant to a degree on the Metal Halide since i never ran one. I've only learned what i know from fellow reefers and R2R threads, since that's where most of the Halide discussions are. So I recently picked up a 72" Giesemann Spectra, and it came with Lumatek electronic ballasts. The Lumatek ballasts are switchable up to 400w, and has a Super Lumen position. It does not have an HQI selection. Does anyone know what the Super Lumen position does? Does it overdrive the bulb like the HQI function? I plan on running 20k Radiums and adding 72" XHOs to the fixture. Any of you old school reefers out there that can lend me a hand with your experience would be great. I want to make sure I use the best selection for the bulb to get the most out of it.

      Cheers,

      Clint

Ahhh man, I can't wait to see this. Only other reefer I know that still runs halides is Ron and have always been super jealous of the color, growth, and shimmer every time I see his tank. I might have switched along time ago but my electrical bill was already astronomical. Now that I have solar might have to rethink this...

I was always contemplating it, but I saw a local reefer that is using the same fixture with that bulb combo and XHOs, and I was immediately sold. The only downside was finding this particular fixture, took me quite sometime to find this size. I do know someone local that has a 48" for sale!

Y’all see Ron’s SPS tank (rfreefer, or something like that). Fan freezing tasting color using 250w phoenix DE, blue+ T5 and actinic XHOs.
