Anyone ever try fragging an acantho?

Well, I did. Haha. Out of curiosity I fragged a scoly, a Cynarina and an acantho with a bandsaw. I wanted to see how they do. All survived and are doing great. The acantho is most interesting to me as there isn’t much on the boards about people doing it. I fragged this one in mid Sept of 2022, so we’re about 4 ish months out. Here are some pics. (Sorry to Vu for putting this amazing acantho at risk, but curiosity for the better of me)

It took about a month and a half before it was healed enough to regularly eat/ take in food.

Both halves are happy and eating now. Is at the rate it’s growing back, I’d guess it will probably take the rest of the year to get back to being round.

      Enjoy!

Wow! What a risk & payoff! Can you go more into the fragging process? Did you cut anywhere in particular? Did you dip after (and with what)? Was there a time where you exposed them to low light? I’ve never heard of this being done before.

Glad the fragging went well. I have never done this but if you haven't seen any of chumminghamsreefs' videos on fragging these corals, I highly recommend. His tanks are amazing!

I used iodine and RO water in the saw and then dipped in iodine again afterwards. I had them in a pretty low light area of my tank for a few months to make sure there wasn’t any algae growth on the skeleton before it could heal over.

I cut through the mouth, so both halves had part of the mouth. (Perpendicular to the mouth)

I think that was the one example I came across. Felt that derisked this endeavor in my mind.

Amazing! The resiliency of those corals to heal and come back are really astounding.
