      Sign of too much light?

Hello, I got this SPS and it was just two little sticks when I got it, then I broke off a piece and put them both at the top of my tank. I noticed they do not seem to be growing upward at all, but I noticed both pieces are climbing downward and spreading out. Does that mean the light is too intense where they are?

I am planning to move the piece on the right with the red arrow down about midway and see how it does but I wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts. These are a few months old.

      Thank you very much.

In the past, I’ve seen mine encrust for a bit some times months before gettin vertical. I’d just give them time!

Ok thank you, I was just worried they were under too much light and being stressed. They have grown wider which is funny, but no branching or upward growth. I am still planning to move a big down some ways to see how it responds.

Increase the intensity of the light slowly and you should be good.

When corals have adequate light they will typically grow thicker. Growing taller faster than they are growing thicker means they need more light (they are trying to grow up to the light). So if you want the corals to grow out thicker then give them adequate light. If you want them to grow taller and not as thick than reduce the lighting.

encrusting could be a way of it making sure a future colony can be supported and has a strong spot to support the weight ?
just how I imagined it anyways

Agreed, this is typical SPS growth pattern for any light

      Thanks buddies!

For an experiment, I broke a piece of bird's nest and put it on the sandbed, and one about 1/3 from the bottom. I thought the one on the sandbed died because it turned white. That was a few months ago. I just noticed today it is red and growing. The one 1/3 up is also growing.
