I love the idea, but I'd be hesitant to participate until such time as I can keep some SPS type corals alive for some duration of time. I wouldn't want to just put out the simple corals that I have

When I was a noob, I would have liked to get in on some free softies and LPS. This shouldn't be a coral snob club, but just a place for open trading of whatever you got. If you post something and you get no takers, no harm done, but I just saw someone posted yellow poyps for sale and it is common to see xenia and gsp posted too. So, there is always someone willing to take your stuff off your hands.

I'd be game for that Most of the stuff I have right now is fairly new (I've built up my tanks over the last few months), and one tank I have was bought almost ready made from a 30 gal tank I purchased (had liverock, multiple polyps, shrooms, etc).

Anyone know a quick reference for proper fragging?

      This is very exciting...lol.

Expounding on what Richlong said... I kinda think we'd need more than two 'tiers' of corals though. Probably 4, maybe 5. Also, it would be cool if we could have a system to 'rate' new corals. Say whenever someone has a new coral to throw into the mix, they submit a photo or two of the coral to a poll, then some minimum number of people (maybe like, 7?) would have to vote on which tier it should belong to. That would help iliminate people contributing a small, ordinary brown zoo and expecting an acan in return. (I'm personally closer to the brown zoo end of the spectrum ) I certainly wouldn't want to cheat anyone...

That would be cool. Different tiers, so that us noobs can still contribute

cool... looks like enough interest to start something.

The idea is not really a barter system. The idea is to get as much home grown corals out as possible. There's no need to contribute a coral to join the club... but I do like the idea of a point system for people who are more active at fragging their corals.

We could set up a site where people could "request" frags of the PIF corals. The more your contribute, the higher you get up in priority level.

Now.. we just need a family tree type web-base system. Any programmer out there?

honestlyi think that we shouldnt worry about what u get compared to what u give i mean if u give something and the person your getting the coral from doesnt care i mean if you really think you can properly care for the coral go for it
i mean ya only have zoos but i would give them to any one even if they didnt giva anything to the effort as long as they tld me theyd give it away for free when it came time to frag it and if they lie
thats in their conseous(sp?). i mean u should have a profile so u know if the person ur about to give your rare and eleite coral to will be able to care for it

      but hey thats just me!

      Great idea Danny.

The only problem I have, is that if my stuff is big enough to frag. I have some favors I would like to return to some people "like You" who helped me out getting started.

BTW the neon green candy cane is almost up to 4 heads.

Doesn't matter if your stuff is big enough to frag yet Bruno. I think it's a great idea to get corals to help w/o spending a bunch of money ... and without us having to keep collecting from depleting reefs.

4 heads already? wow! that's great! I talked to one of my source and they said that the neon slime candy canes are becoming more rare now. They are trying to aquaculture it now... meaning the price for them will increase even more. It's definitely one of the easiest and best looking coral out there.

you're gonna have that concern regardless of where you get the coral from.

hmmm interesting concept....definitely needs to get fleshed out. I would definitely be wary of giving frags to noobs that never show up again though...
