Why you don’t toss fungia plates away

One of the smartest pieces of advice I got from a fellow reefer (inurmind) was not to throw away a dead fungia plate… here’s why:

How long ago did it "die?"

Did it "die" suddenly or appear "sick" for a time?

Thanks for posting!, I'm curious on how this process proceeded.

It arrived at the LFS damaged; I purchased it and tried to get it back to health. Gave it a couple iodine dips. Very unique rainbow & it did well for a while but didn’t overcome the injury. As fungias do, it started to slowly peel away. At some point I put it aside in my angler tank to keep it from getting bothered on its way out (mouth was fully receded to skeleton and spots with white flesh on a couple ribs). It went from white to brown a couple months back. I just noticed these guys yesterday. At first I thought they were rogue zoas but I see fungia tentacles now

Great stuff! Now you have a nice mama to harvest off of. Hope the children grow up to be just like her, minus the die off lol

      Thanks for the info!
I have a couple of old fungia's that started looking sick recently and have been wondering what to expect. I guess I need to get an angler now!

Update. 6 survivors (including conjoined twins). Hopefully mom pops out some more! They ended up having a tiny stem I was able to get at with my gryphon. Pretty sure the smaller ones will appreciate the space.
