Doubt it. They are also used to cold water probably not compatible long term in warmer reef tanks.

I would acclimate them slowly to the new temp.

Make sure you have a fishing license and follow local laws and rules...

I'd strongly advise against it for a few reasons...unless you're setting up a temperate tank... Cliffnoted answer: they'd probably be short lived and questionable on how "reef safe" they'd be

Just to add to the above post, I would probably purchase at the LFS. There are different colored ones that would do better in a tropical temperature setting as most of our reef tanks.

I have tried a few times and none of them last long. Some due to probably temperature difference and my wrasse loves them. typically temperature or wrasse poaches them in a few days. None have made it past 2 months.

      San Diego bay hermit crabs

Funny enough, this little experiment is exactly what got me in to reefing in the first place. My hermits never made it long term

To your Point Suess, if someone goes out when the local water temp is say 61 degrees like it is now, but they maintain their tank at 79-80, unless you have a pretty long acclimation process, you are essentially boiling them to death.

Now the empty shells are nice for the tropical ones you have.

I have seen large groups of people gathering shellfish off the rocks at mission bay and guarantee they did not have a license. I think you are entitled to harvest but you do need a California fishing license as one would at times, gather sand crabs for bait for example.

This is not the first time I have seen this subject over the years.

Need a really good chiller to run a Pacific Coast environment through the summer.
