I think I need a break from my tank

Anyone else ever get like this? This morning I found a loose tube that spilled 10g of tank water in the garage. I've been dealing with bubble algae, sps die off, cal reactor breaking, and all this with no desire to keep on investing in the tank. I kind of feel like my tank owns me, not me owning the tank. Anyone else ever feel like this?

I hear you, this hobby can be very demanding in time and money and is extremely unforgiving of neglect. Especially with SPS, it seems like one big enough negative event can flush years of effort overnight. Lots of hobbies allow you to take a break easily, but not reef keeping. I'm back in for a little over a year now after taking an eight year break from the hobby. Eventually I got to the place where I was ready to dive back in last fall. Good luck whichever way you decide to go. - Alan

Only all the time, always highs and lows in this hobby, for me I had to find a good balance of tank automation and manual maintenance as well as moving away from keeping sps corals as I found I donít have the time anymore to commit to the tank, so easier, hardier corals work well for me.

Yes. And then I downgrade and it just isnít the same, so I keep wanting to go bigger, but then it just gets more expensive. I get that same feeling every once in a while

This is what I'm thinking. I could get rid of the huge frag tank and just enjoy a simple, easy tank.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I get it. Just started getting motivated again after letting tank sit fallow for 6 months due to an ich outbreak. Wahhh!

Sometimes I just hire someone to clean the tank and handle it a few months when tired of the cleaning and water changes, it allows me to just enjoy the fun side of reefing before picking up the water changes and algae scrapers again. There are some good reef maint. people on the site

I'll take this into consideration as well.

On the bad side, I just discovered my heater hasn't been working and my tank has been 70 for how knows how long...

There's a fine line between owning your tank, and your tank owning you!

This has been my signature for a long long time.

When it's no longer enjoyable, it's time to make changes of some kind. For me that meant I just started keeping not so hard to keep corals, and I'm much happier this way.

Edit* It took me this post to realize I or we don't have our funny little quote signatures at the bottom anymore!

Or rather, looks like you might have just discovered the reason you've had some SPS die-off.. so yay!

Wish I was there to offer my services!

.......scratch that. I'm done with Cali lol

Being a servicing company for so many years killed the joy of being a hobbyist. I've only recently been getting the itch to jump in as a hobbyist again.
