Cool Returning to the Hobby!!!! Biocube 32 build!!!

So, I am returning to the hobby after an almost 10 year hiatus.

Boy oh boy a lot has changed. New techniques/different equipment. But now I have amazon and 2 day shipping to aid me. Hahah.

I'm planning on documenting my build and hoping to get as much help as possible from others as I reacquaint myself with the ins and outs.

      Few data points.

Ordered the biocube 32 and stand reef package with live rock/sand from marineandreef.(had a decent black friday deal) I know I could have prob saved money by buying the individual parts but for time sake plus I am starting from scratch equipment wise I needed a new foundation.

From there I want to get that up and running and make upgrades.

Already went overboard ordering ro/di system, extra rock base, test kits and other seemingly "needed" items.

The delivery for the various items is scheduled for this week so I hope to get the tank set up and start the cycle this weekend.

Will update with pictures and more detail soon.

Welcome back. The bio cubes are sweet. My old bio cube was one of the best reefs I created and was successful keeping. Look forward to seeing it once you get it together.

Delivery came today and got the tank/stand set up, opened all the goodies and got the RO/DI system set up.

Stand is more stable than the reviews said.

I ordered the combo that came with 15lbs of the life rock. Since one of the rules is to have about 1lb per gallon I ordered more rock base on Amazon so I have about 25lbs of rock for the tank.

The water system I got was the Aquatilife system. 60$ and had a DI add on. I got that one since I am able to hook it up to my kitchen sink so it is more convenient for me.

Plan to get some buckets tomorrow so I can start to mix water and get the rock scape/ sand in and start the cycle.

Any pointers on the building the rock scape with the two fishies adhesive gel that comes with the kit? Prior tanks I just stacked them since my last reef was a 55. With the biocube being taller I have a different challenge.

I also read the pump for this tank was not too strong so I bought another pump on black Friday. But now I am thinking it may be too strong for my tank.

It is a adjustable 2000GPH pump, dual head, 360 degree, 16w pump.

      Any thoughts?

Cool build, can't wait to see how it goes. As for the pump, you could put a valve on the return so you can adjust it further.

      Welcome back!
As for pump, that's a lot of flow, I think most of us are still running about 5x tank volume turnover for returns, so you may be dialing down a good bit on the new pump.

Started the cycle over the weekend. Picked up 20lbs of live sand and 5 lbs of live rock from a lfs to assist with the cycle.

Will test in the next few days and post the specs.

What is everyone's setup for their filters?

I have a skimmer that came with my kit. Thinking about putting that in the overflow box compartment. (Compartment one)

Then running filterfloss then carbon then a combination of chemipure blue/biofilter media gems in the second compartment.

The third has my heater and return pump.

Eventually I would like to get the intank media basket and refugium set up but baby steps after I bought the kit hahaha.

I would not use any media at all, and no floss or bio ball type stuff as that usually end up being a nitrate sink. I would not run carbon unless you had an issue that may call for it. I don't use the chempure either. I'd just push water, LR and or LR rubble maybe, chaeto if you have a chamber for that or can create any kind of fuge section.
      Looks good so far.

Any recommendations on lights/lighting schedule for the fuge?

      1st test.
      Day 5.

      Looks to me about:

      8.0 ph
      .25 ammonia
      0 nitrite
      0 nitrate

What I use for fuge light would most likely be too big (home depot shop light/grow lamp) but there are a number of small clip ons out there, LED's
Many do a reverse light cycle fuge light on at night and this helps stabilize PH, or you can run 24/7

You should post for chaeto in the livestock wanted section for more views, many people give it away when trimming, I'm sure someone will have for you.
