Don't laugh....How do you run carbon?

My tank has a bunch of stuff floating around in it and does not have that clear look to it...not to crazy bad but not like other tanks I have seen. I read that running carbon can help out..what is that exactly?

Activated carbon (you can pick it up locally, go with a high quality brand like Kent or Black Diamond) and you run put it in a bag in your sump, run it in a phosban reactor, basically anyway that you can run water through (best) or past (next best) it is the way to go.

I don't have a sump or a phosban reactor...all I have is a HOB skimmer. will that work?

Most likely not. Most likely it would block/hinder the skimmer's performance. You can always get a cheap used HOB powerfilter and stick a bag or two of carbon in that.

I THINK that carbon provides chemical filtration mostly and it sounds like what you need is more of a mechanical filter. If you picked up a cannister filter you could put carbon in it and get the benefit of both but I wouldn't run it all the time.

You can also look into Purigen, its lot cheaper than carbon in log run.
