      Salt

Now that I have a 90g set up, and my water storage system almost completed, I wanted to get opinions on salt mix.
I know we fortunate to have Scripps water, but I've only used that to start up a tank or on smaller nanos.(Easy to fill 5g jugs). My last 150g, I was using Red Sea Pro.
I plan on this tank being a mixed reef, but heavy on sps. Is Tropic Marin worth the money? What about Instant Ocean?
I know this may be preference, but thought I'd put it out there.

I just use instant ocean sea salt and dose to the parameters I want. It’s cheap and Randy Holmes-Farley also uses IO.

I use NeoMarine and I'm sps heavy in a mixed reef. Love it. Check out the technical data on it for levels.

Interesting watch on this exact comparison of salt cost vs. quality debate I found recently:

Really enjoyed looking at your set up before this viral mess, Ty. Which salt are you using currently, Ty?

Thank you. I was using Tropic Marin Pro. Definitely loved it, but it is bit expensive. Now using IO Reef Crystals for the past 3-4 WC. I haven’t noticed a big difference in anything that I can contribute to the salt change. Just been changing 5g at a time though.

Yes, it’s a bit pricey. Been using Tropic Marin Pro November. Been unavailable recently online or at AW me. That video you was interesting. I’m thinking of going I/O versus aquaforest probiotic recently. Doing more research today.

I haven't looked that closely yet at parameters these salts mix at,but what are you dosing to your I/O mix?

Will check out that video Ty, thanks. What do you keep the big 3 parameters at in your amazing mixed reef?

I’ve been using tropic marin pro as well, before that I was using the Red Sea blue bucket. Both mix clear and quick but I did notice the Red Sea blue bucket salt left an ever so small amount of reside after mixing hundreds of gallons while the tropic Marin has yet to leave any. Happy with both.

Slightly off topic but just letting everyone know that BRS has Tropic Marin Pro 200 gallon back in stock. Been waiting a while for these. Grab em while supplies last 😀

      Generally shoot for these parameters:
      Alk: 8.5
      Calcium: 420
      Magnesium: 1350

      Nothing too crazy

Thanks for the heads up. I was going to buy one, but I was at Aquatica the other day and Dave mentioned he uses Classic Tropic Marin in all of his tanks. He mentioned that TMPro is meant to be used with systems running a Ca reactor. His bags are 66lbs. for mixing 230gal
which he does say the actual number is usually lower. It was $100 so I thought I'd give it a try. I know most people who use TM salts seem to use TMPro these days, but prior to that being available, they used Classic. Thoughts? BTW, my tank is a new mixed reef with several small frags and will be dosing 2-part for now.

I’m just dosing the Alk, Ca, Mg. With this last batch of salt from IO it seems to be mixing to 380 Ca, 1300 Mg, 8.0 at 1.026ppt. But it seems to vary from batch to batch because one batch I was getting around 10ish Alk.
