Being that your varios S8 is an 1-1/4” pump, just a suggestion, you may want to increase your pipe size to 1-1/4”. I picked up the same and after speaking with the mfgr, it is recommended to run a full size header to not decrease the flow by reducing the outlet. Again just a suggestion. The plumbing layout looks fabulous though.

I considered that I haven’t decided whether to hard plumb with 1 1/4 then reduced or to have a reducer from the pump and go 1 inch flex. The return isn’t glued in place yet because I haven’t decided. Thanks for the suggestion vinny

I’ve done the research. As a pipe fitter by trade, I know from experience it’s not a recommended practice to reduce the outlet. I encourage you to make the call and ask them to spec out your system. That way your warranty will be covered if something goes wrong. Plus, you spent good money and want the best from your pump. You can always send flow from the pump back to the sump to have less flow going to the tank. A great video discussing turnover rate on a tank by BRS was a good one. 3-5 times total tank volume should be adequate. But internal tank flow should be rated for 50-100 times the volume. Again, just a suggestion. I’ll try and find the video. It’s pretty informative.

It’s a pretty long video but you can listen to it on the way to work. For me, it goes against everything I thought I already knew. But there is some great understandable science backing their suggestions. Does it work? Seems to work for them. I personally don’t know. But this concept will be one I adapt to my system and see if it works. The discussion on coral health vs flow rate inside the tank really caught my attention. You have a very clean setup. I look forward to seeing your progress.

Achieving Adequate flow shouldn’t be an issue. Internally between the gyre xf350’s and the mp40’s I’ll have ( 10,560 GPH for both gyres and 9000 gph for the MP 40s both on my flow ). Flow from the sump to the DT a varios-8 again at max is 2700 GPH, minus head pressure and restrictions from piping should still fall within the recommended range

You are correct. Obtaining desired flow from sump should be adequate yes. But, my concern all along is restricting the outlet of the pump. Damage can occur over time. Reducing life span of pump. When are you planning to fire the system up?

I pretty sure it’ll be fine. My plan is to come 1 1/4 off the pump and reduce it to the 1 inch. It’s a powerful return pump and I most likely won’t be running it anywhere near max so reducing the from 1 1/4 to 1 inch will be okay.
