      Back at it again!

Well, it’s been long enough. Life has taken many unexpected twists. Some good and some bad. Either way, a new chapter is being written. Where to start?! Found a 180g glass tank and stand that Danny had. On the way home, someone made an unexpected lane change in front of me and....POP went the tank bottom. So now I had trash to get rid of. Stand and canopy weren’t my taste so it’s time to start over. Then I found a 180 acrylic that was boasted as a beauty.....NOT! Scratched to hell and the stand and canopy were junk as well. All is not lost. Tank can be sanded and buffed out. Which is what will happen. So the creative juices started flowing. Time to make a stand and canopy. But make one big enough for a 300g upgrade and enough room to fit all the equipment. One thing I learned from last 240 build was....keep your power and controller out of the sump area. 1 desert trip and everything failed while I was gone. So I have started my stand a few days ago and things just keep getting more and more detailed as I go. I have built a separate power panel that is part of the stand but walled off with a full height bulkhead. The sump area is waterproof to allow for a seam break of a sump, failed check valve on return pump or an overflow from an ATO. I calculate it will hold 36g. I found a great sump on here from Clint that is an old 100g tank that’s been baffled. In operation it will hold 56g. Bought a Current USA Loop system with a second LED bar from Al. I then found a Reef Octopus 200INT skimmer from Zane. I also acquired some acrylic maintenance items from a nice lady who tore her system down. Trying my best to get the tank ready and in place before shoulder reconstruction surgery in December. Not gonna get it cycling cause I won’t be able to do maintenance for a few months afterwards. I thought I was clever incorporating stained glass in my last cube build 10 years ago but I think I may have gotten the idea from Dave or, there was just a couple great ideas floating around at the time. But I will say this, when it’s done, I think this, will be something you’re not gonna expect. I like working with mixed media. Wood/glass. This time.....
Without further babbling I’ll post some pics of progress.

Controller and power center. Doors and top are in the design process. It’s gonna be a new try at an old idea that I’ve never seen incorporated in the hobby before. It should make for a showpiece in my theater.

Canopy has paint as well. Trying to
decide whether I will hang it or build a tank mounted stand. Wanna build something that will allow me access to clean tank. Now it will be time tomorrow to overlay the espresso over the copper/brown base coat. I will spray it thin then do a dry brush over it simulating wood grain. Once that’s done, I will do the doors and cabinet top with a resin simulating granite.

      Back at it again!

The stand is in a holding pattern until this moist weather goes away. Can’t finish my top and doors til it does. So, I’ll use this moist weather to start wet sanding out all these bad scratches!! Man I wish I had $2k for a new glass tank. This will definitely be the last and only time I do this! 1000 grit isn’t even getting these scratches out. Might have to go get some 800. That’s a wrap for tonight. Back at it most of the day tomorrow. While doing all this, I’m also working on a coast to coast overflow, and getting a baffle system made for my sump. I can’t do it all so I’m farming out the baffle setup. Found a place in Costa Mesa that has a full blown machine shop that rents out equipment for people to use. Once shoulder surgery is complete I think I may take a class on learning how to use their laser cutter for future endeavors. Gonna have to find a way to recoup all this money spent.

Got a second coat of paint on the stand and canopy last weekend. Going for a more antique finish. Still have another coat of espresso to rub on but for now the dry brush method is working out just fine.

Got the top and 1 end done today. Started peeling off the paper from the bottom because I think I’m gonna go bare bottom. What a job it is to sand and polish this tank. The end was so bad, I had to go pick up some 800 grit to get the deep scratches out.
