Pygmy Angel/least risky angel with corals...if that is possible

      Hey Reefers!

Went to my LFS today and have been wanting an angel fish and they’ve had a few in display. I was told of the flame back angel and Pygmy angel are least likely to pick at corals. Anyone have any kind of experience with angel fish in a reef tank or have a Pygmy or flame back? (More so the Pygmy) I just want some input before I grab one.

I don’t think there’s any guarantees with any of them. Depends on the fish, and the setup it’s in. I personally have a multicolor angel in my reef for over a year now. I have a bunch of acans and other fleshy corals and he’s been fine with everything in the tank. I’ve never seen him nip or even look twice at anything

I heard the flame angels are the worst. I have a coral beauty angel and he is reef save. Guess it depends on the fish.

Only reef safe angels are genicanthus (swallowtail, bellus, wattanabei, lamarcks, masked).

You might get lucky with others but it’s really a crapshoot.

individuals from those types have also been known to pick at certain corals, so you pretty much could have just said the second sentence. Genicanthus angels are no guarantee either

Do you have any links that show genicanthus angels that have nipped on corals? I’ve never seen any scientific articles that suggest that.

Im really trying to understand because I have 5 of them and you’re making me worried that they’ll pick on my corals. All I’ve ever read including liveaquaria, r2r say they are reed safe.

I’ve seen it in my own tank with a Lamarck’s. Stressed out and killed multiple pieces of sps with the nipping. I can send videos or photos of bite marks if you want.

Pygmy angels are so hit and miss. I have had two flames in the past and both times were good. I have also heard horror stories about them them eating brains, acans, etc.

So any Angel or almost any fish for that matter can pick at coral. That being said coral beauty is probably the safest. I’ve had a Pygmy angel in a reef tank and it did fine. Best way to find out is put a frag in the quarantine tank with it and see what happens. I have had many different fish store employees tell me fish are reef safe when I know the fish was risky at best. Always better to do your own research.

As mentioned above coral beauties are the least risky as I have had one in a reef tank. However I didnt have any type of clam, scallop, acans... lps type corals which is what I have heard they typically nip at..
