Sump thoughts and what goes in your stand.

So I came up with enough funds for a new sump this Black Friday sale and wanted to see what everyone’s tank looks like underneath. When selecting a sump, do you look to fill the whole bottom stand? Leave some space for other things? Would you rather fill the whole space with a large sump?

What are your thoughts and if you had a chance to redo it, what would you have done differently?

I practically had to grease the sides of my sump to slide it in through the back of my stand. My only complaint is the door on the front of the stand is not very big but that is a complaint with my stand, not my sump.

So how big is your sump and would you go big or small?

I have no issue sliding a sump that fills the stand as one of my side of the stand is open.

My max sump I can fill will be 44” x 18” x 16”. The Triton 44 sump will fit nicely to fill the stand and I have plans on getting this sump. Only issue is that everything else will be hold outside the stand. Such as, dosing containers, ATO, and chiller. Might not be the cleanest setup if everything is outside the tank. My chiller and UV is already sitting outside lol. With that being said. Would you guys fit all these equipment inside the stand and go with a small sump? Everyone is different, I understand but would be nice to get some thoughts running.

I like to go large aa possible but also with some room left incase of additional equipment down the road. Trying to avoid exterior cabinets for the extra stuff.

So maybe filling the whole stand is not a good idea then.

Not ideally unless you stand is very tall and you can have equipment placed above it and how you want it.

Otherwise oversize the stand center tank and have excess room

Put the sump outside the stand if you have a deep tank and or limited access because of doors or bracing. I hate my access to the sump but have no where feasible to place outside of the stand. I really wish I could go outside my stand for easier access to everything.
I'd think about your equipment as well before ordering one. Drain location and return

No matter what, you’ll want to keep your chiller outside of the stand anyways. They put off a ton of heat when running. IMO, go with the biggest sump you can fit in that space. Odds are you’ll have room to put a shelf above the sump for your dosing stuff, etc.

Typically sumps are about 1/3 of tank volume, so like I've got a 40g sump for my 120g, and I made drain/skimmer section, and return pump section just a little bigger than footprint of those, just big enough to pull and maintain easily, and rest is fuge, I like a good size fuge.
This leaves me some room under stand for other stuff, and an ato resivoire.
